"Mr. Handy" is a misnomer.
They have three tools: a circular saw, a flamethrower/blowtorch, and a two finger pincer like pliers. No hands. Hands would be good because then they could use the blowtorch, saw as well as all the other tools like pliers and wrenches in the garage.
No wonder baby Shaun was crying just before the war; you ever try to change a diaper on a baby with just a pair of pliers and a circular saw?

I would personally call the flammable liquid for a flamethrower fuel sooner than ammunition, but for the Mr. Handy it also isn't exclusively a weapon since they can use it for domestic purposes.
Yeah, that's a good point too. But the weapon argument makes me scratch my head when you consider the markings on the calendar. Why would it need regular ammo/fuel replacement unless you're using it regularly? Rodents a constant problem in 2077 Sanctuary? lol Everything, IMO, leads me believe it's actually fuel, including the animation underneath, which wouldn't happen with nuclear "fuel" or maybe it would and I'm not thinking it through deep enough. Like I said, I just laugh about it.
Regular cooking use might account for the calendar, though I'm trying to remember exactly where it is that we see a Mr. Handy doing that (I'm just not remembering where it was right now).

Codsworth having an atomic engine kind of rules out it being regular fuel since atomic engines don't run on petroleum products, and he's obviously going to need fuel for the flamethrower one way or the other.
So I'm at Greygarden right now, with lot's of Mr. Handy's, and when they're running around and that flame shoots out from underneath, it sure looks like a natural gas flame to me. To each his own, to me the box labelled "Mr. Handy Fuel" and the natural gas flames underneath spell natural gas fuel to me. I mean, if the atomic engine produces that flame to run on, then it could produce the flame for the weapon too.

that's Über logical..

how can one wash dishes with a circular saw? imagine he helps you to dry your hairs.. with a flamethrower.

Again you be a good capitalist and buy more accessory attachments for your Mr. Handy or Miss Nanny to give it more functionality.

Doesn't natural gas more typically burn with a blue flame? The hovering only requires an intake of air to heat and expel, and basic heat could certainly be provided by an atomic engine but the flamerthrower is shooting a very different gout of flame, visibly very different in consistency from what the thruster produces.

But regardless, we do know both that a typical Mr. Handy has an atomic engine (by Codsworth's account) and yet that it uses oil-based fuel in some manner (from the oil we recovered from the fuel canisters). The improbability of running for hundreds of years on fuel supports further the use of the atomic engine as primary power source.

And I would add the case of Curie, a Miss Nanny (a Mr. Handy variant) who is enclosed in the hidden section of Vault 81. She's clearly isolated from any plausible source of fuel with no evident canisters sufficient to meet 200 years of supply. But notably, she lacks a flamethrower, having a laser instead. These fit perfectly with the use of an atomic engine for power as the laser has no inherent requirement for material fuel.
you don't got the message that the fuel is a sales hoax?
yes! its a lie! the handy don't actually needs that fuel to function... its a trick to get the owner of the handy to frequently return to the store to purchase a product that don't actually need.
It is kind of odd though that the default equipment for a Mr. Handy is the circular saw, which if you look at the design is only really useful as a weapon. Unless of course they are using other means to hold the material it is cutting, the design doesn't allow it to both hold and cut something at the same time. If you follow the attachment theory it would make sense for it to be an attachment not the default configuration.

As far as Currie it is unclear how active she has been over the 200 years, particularly after her colleagues passed away. There is a very good chance that she took time outs where she wasn't active at all.

Another thing I wonder about just having done the quest when you first approach her she says oh another stranger, so did the druggie guy make it down that far? It seems unlikely as you still have to fight you way through everything to reach her.
The wiki says they're nuclear. So, I'm guessing a nuclear rocket engine producing ionized air for propulsion? (the dm/dt in the rocket equation).
