Codsworth having an atomic engine kind of rules out it being regular fuel since atomic engines don't run on petroleum products, and he's obviously going to need fuel for the flamethrower one way or the other.

how can one wash dishes with a circular saw? imagine he helps you to dry your hairs.. with a flamethrower.
thats called crisp dry... don't worry... it will be in style within the next 54 years... so its a future thing.

Again you be a good capitalist and buy more accessory attachments for your Mr. Handy or Miss Nanny to give it more functionality.
Well I want that robot arm cook my self, and if that means i'm a capitalist.. guilty as charged... hahaha
But regardless, we do know both that a typical Mr. Handy has an atomic engine (by Codsworth's account) and yet that it uses oil-based fuel in some manner (from the oil we recovered from the fuel canisters). The improbability of running for hundreds of years on fuel supports further the use of the atomic engine as primary power source.
And I would add the case of Curie, a Miss Nanny (a Mr. Handy variant) who is enclosed in the hidden section of Vault 81. She's clearly isolated from any plausible source of fuel with no evident canisters sufficient to meet 200 years of supply. But notably, she lacks a flamethrower, having a laser instead. These fit perfectly with the use of an atomic engine for power as the laser has no inherent requirement for material fuel.
yes! its a lie! the handy don't actually needs that fuel to function... its a trick to get the owner of the handy to frequently return to the store to purchase a product that don't actually need.
As far as Currie it is unclear how active she has been over the 200 years, particularly after her colleagues passed away. There is a very good chance that she took time outs where she wasn't active at all.
Another thing I wonder about just having done the quest when you first approach her she says oh another stranger, so did the druggie guy make it down that far? It seems unlikely as you still have to fight you way through everything to reach her.
