what happens if i ignore all settlements after the first one, i quit the last game because i got so annoyed with all the settlements i had to look after. i don´t mind only caring for the first one!

You will DIE!!!!!

No it's fine actually, unless you aim for the Minutemen ending that requires to have rallied several of them

Settlements are only mandatory, if you want to follow the Minutemen main story line.
Then you have to settle at Sanctuary after freeing Preston, one random settlement that Preston sends you to, as well as take back the Castle and gain a total of 8 settlements.

For all other factions you don't have to touch any settlement at all.
You don't even have to free Preston in the first place.

like the others said, you only need 8 settlements for the minutemen attack on the institute. so just recruit them, install the essentials and let them rot. the odd attack here and there shouldn't lower your rep so much that they'll leave you even if you don't rush in to defend.

Or you could install uncapped settlement surplus which lets settlements actually produce stuff and stopps settlement attacks, making settlements an asset instead of a liability:

And transfer settlements, so you only have to build a settlement once and can reload it in another playthrough: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/22442 or just go by using blueprints on the nexus

As part of the main quest, you'll need to build at a settlement location, and the Brotherhood does require a similar small bit of building, but neither of these strictly require the site to be developed as any kind of place to settle, and you'll be fine with just one.

As others have said, besides that, multiple settlements are only required for the Minutemen.

I've heard about people doing this. Even going so far as to never even leave that Sanctuary.

Though, by "first one," remember that you don't have to go to go to Sanctuary at all. On my most recent playthrough, didn't go to sanctuary until level 80...This game is very sandbox. Very little must be done.

Could pick a different "first one". I really like the kingsport lighthouse. That's where I'd pick, if only doing the one.

The campaign and such create this "false sense of urgency" but there's no real urgency. Just do it at your own pace, the way you want it done.

as long you dont play survival mode you wont loose out much, in survival mode the settlements are needed save places to sleep and barter

sleep for sure, but barter? does anyone playing survival waste so much points in charisma for that stupid perk? lone wanderer is a must but anything more just a waste imo

well, 2 points in local leader will let you build workbenches, which can be useful.

Same goes for the alcohol perk.. being able to avoid addiction to it, and have double the buffs is pretty useful too.

Lone Wanderer is certainly an "OP" Perk, but is is no where near beeing a "needed, must-have Perk". I have played Survival for years, and i do not use it at all, except in a few plays where i have got ALL the Affinity Perks and then i take both Lone Wanderer and Attack Dog and travel with Dogmeat in the End. Usually well above lvl 80 at this point.

I like to play with high INT and get the Magazine that grants +5% xp when travelling *With* a Companion. Super strong on Survival.

There is one Perk that get you going for an strong early start if you play Survival, and it is strong on Very Hard too. Booring maybe, but very useful, and it is Chemist.

Poison Caltrops. Buy anything superfast. At lvl 10 you have all the strong weapons, and a very powerful set of Metal/Combatr Legendary Armour. you can get all this in an hour or two of play time.

chemist is a must have of course for crafting stimpaks, rad away and antibiotics on survival. but that's in the INT tree which has useful perks in general. chr beyond 3 is crap unless you like playing sims.
also, lone wanderer works WITH dogmeat. so you can get the effects of both the +5 XP magazine as well as lone wanderer at the same time by choosing him.

There are a few places you can build a settlement without getting the minutemen quest line involved.
But once you get a minutemen settlement built up... it starts getting a bit more complicated.

Anybody else here know which ones?

You can make the workbenches available and not tend to any settlements.
They only Minutemen requirement is that you FREE the settlements or Enable them.
Build Sanctuary only, since it has all the benches you'll need in the future. To build benches you need a level 2, CHA 6, perk (Local Leader ? or the likes). Which I think is a forced hand design, but I see how high CHA is needed to pursue different paths in convos, thus different outcomes.
