Solomon (the chem seller in Diamond City) gives you a quest to get some of the fern's flowers, and claims that they're naturally good at sucking radiation and are great for "cooking" Rad-X and Radaway. But it's not used in any recipes, so those may have been cut from the final game, leaving the ferns without much use.
You can eat them as a low-radiation food, and hand them in for Solomon's quest.
I was hoping to get something like super radaway when I did that quest, he just gave me drugs I didn't need except to sell. It might of been missing content, be nice to find a small mod that adds in some use for the ferns.
Or he makes some awful poison, gives it to you to test, and you die. That would be an old school Fallout quest ending. :D
