My Vault 88 was attacked by Supermutants!
But... the Vault door was closed. I could tell they were out there. To end the attack, I had to go out the door. Does that seem right to you? Is there a time limit where attackers just give up?

Also, if you remove the back plugs to the other two entrances, but then replace the wooden walls with concrete, can Vault 88 still be attacked from the back? Wiki says if the wooden plugs are not removed, no attacks come from that direction. But mama didn't raise no idiots who's gonna spend half a day clicking on everything but to scrap... so ~ scrapall.

I don't trust the wiki on that. Settlements have internal enemy spawns so any exterior defenses you make to block attacks don't work. You can make some pretty good mazes to setup kill zones though.
This is the same with any settlement attack anywhere. No physical barrier will prevent an attack. Attackers will always teleport around any physical barriers eventually. And ignore barriers when they spawn in.

Many times I have had SMs attack Vault 88.
Once you open those back doors you can never close them to attackers. That is why the wiki recommends never opening them, if that's a concern.

I just open them all because the multiple exits and entrances are useful, particularly in Survival. I move the defence focus to the central area rather than the perimeter. It's never a big deal.

vault 88 will be attacked no matter what if the door is closed it doesn't matter. The other two entrances if you clear the path will get enemies spawning there along with the front door, sometimes forcing you to head to one of the cleared areas to defend the vault or putting a lot of turrets at each door to defend it the store front especially likes to get visits, sometimes with rockets disabling default turrets very quickly, no matter what you do attackers will spawn across the vault ignoring doors/entrances and spawn where ever they want like all attacks if you don't kill them it will eventually auto complete and either fail or succeed in defending itself which doesn't matter what you have setup the outcome is a coin toss as theres always a chance to fail.

build barricades to the entrances of those tunnels (concrete blocks) and put heavy machineguns on them.

5 blocks can completely cover an entrance. Snap 5 of them each other in an open area and group-select them and move them to a tunnel entrance. no holes will be left around them.

Stupid game. They expect you to click on junk hundreds of times to scrap it. What a fuggin' waste of time.

I have removed only north-east blockages and there are three locations among that path enemies will spawn and attack my defense. They usually get killed but sometimes when it comes to be supermutants I still need to clear the area myself.
And yes enemies can spawn inside vault 88. These are the locations near the main atrium tunnel that connect to main vault 88 entrance.

i blocked up every other entrance to Vault 88; the only "entrance" into the vault itself was via the door, which was shut. When the SM's attacked, 1 was in the pharmacy (which i'd blocked off with concrete walls so it couldn't actually leave that space) and the rest were all in the cave by the door. None spawned inside.

Didn't even stick any turrets outside, they were just in the lobby by the door. No turrets in the caves either, but i blocked up doorways with concrete walls anyway. No access from caves into the vault though, so that might make a difference....

I leave the entrance to the pharmacy closed off and have never had any attacks in Vault 88 attack from any place other than just outside the Vault's door. Zero. In over 2 dozen runs, 3600+ hrs of game time.

I do leave the Vault door open and about 6 turrets and one guard with a mini gun take care of the attackers fairly quickly. None have ever made it pass the Vault's entrance. My char just fast travels there and watches the attack for a short bit.

Put your defenses in the entry by the vault door, and at that one intersection with the big central pillar of dirt.

They will go by one or both of those areas eventually. No need to worry about them getting too far if there's a line of turrets at both points.

So how settlement attacks work is Defense + RNG
Defense score determines the likely hood of an attack to happen
The higher the score the less likely it will happen.
If you have a Settlement is under attack notice if I remember right you got 3 days to go to the settlement.

if you don't arrive in 3 days its considered a loss and it will have some sort of damages
If you arrive Early - the enemies spawns at specific locations
If you arrive later - enemy will already be inside

If you want to put odds in your favor I suggest downloading

that Settlement Management Software was last updated in mid 2016 and looks beset with more bugs than a sudanese outhouse nowadays. I recommend SKK Workshop Ownership Utilities and Settlement Attack System https://skkmods.com

Does the vault door open or does the attackers just teleport past it? or are the attackers forever on the outside of the closed vault door? if so, can you just ignore them? If ignored, to the attackers just go away or stay there forever?

Like all settlement attacks, they spawn at specific points regardless of your doors or walls. Which is why sometimes they might get stuck in things, behind or under platforms, etc. They don't walk to the place they literally just teleport when the game says 'now attack'.

Potentially both. Like every other settlement they get spawned at an initial point, but if they struggle to get to their destination they can get teleported past obstacles, and if you sleep/wait after they've spawned the game may just calculate how far they got without bothering about walls.

That said, if you're waiting for them I find it best to leave a single path open, because then when the game does bother working out their exact movement it favours that path instead of hitting a block everywhere and eventually teleporting them as a last resort.
