She will not respawn, and no one will ever take her place as a merchant.
I had a similar thing; by reflex I picked a aluminum can off the ground. Stupid me, it belonged to Trudy at the Diner.
I dropped the can, thinking we'd be good. I guess that's not how you give it back. Trudy and son started shooting, so I ran. I figured I'd get a three day time out.
But like you, a day or so later I was at the Starlight Drive-in and heard shots. So I ran there and... Trashcan Carla was having a shoot out with Trudy & Son. DANG! I didn't know becoming enemies with Trudy made Trudy enemies with Carla. Carla was losing.
So I had to choose: Trudy who might sell in a few days or Carla who was a friendly merchant now. Sorry Trudy; she shouldn't have put her life on the line to for a stupid aluminum can already dropped.
Guess I can just kill the brahmin. Or, just let it do its route.
Oh, Im sure. I had not even fired a round before I found her body. Had to run up and over a hill to catch the other ones. I never could figure out what the Institute sent the synths for either.
Her wiki page does not mention anything about her having Protected or Essential status.
There is a random encounter spot nearby, and the encounters frequently walk down the road toward that intersection. That is all it was. So you could just assume it was a random patrol. Its also not all that far from the Switchboard, so you could also say they were on the look out for Railroad stragglers that got away.
Allows you to edit the inventory of NPC's. Like for example giving Traders and their caravan guards ballistic weave armour and decent weapons :)
I killed her once by laying mines inside Sanctuary.
There are console commands for revive if you want.
It doesn't mention it no, but she should be. I can double check next time I play if I remember. I have an enhanced console mod that lets me see an NPC's level, flags, perks etc.
EDIT: OKay, yep. Just checked and she's Protected. Here is a screenshot I took, showing her status in the enhanced console mod that shows flags and such.

My own guess is that the breach in Protected status has to do with how the game sometimes randomly attributes attacks to the Sole Survivor and awards them XP even when they're not involved at all.
