Trashcan Carla
Started a new game and was finishing up Starlite Drive-in when I heard laser fire in the distance. I headed up toward Drumlin Diner and saw blue laser fire up ahead. Institute lasers. I started sprinting to the action, but when I got there, Carla and two synths were dead. This was my first time seeing her. I was not aware she could be killed like that.

Still more laser fire and I ran to that. Two more synths were shooting at Carla's brahmin and I shot them. The brahmin then just wandered off.

Later, I noticed Carla's brahmin coming to Sanctuary. No Carla of course, but that brahmin comes by regular, every couple days or so.

Carla will not respawn, I dont think. Does any other merchant take over her route?

She will not respawn, and no one will ever take her place as a merchant.

Nope.

I had a similar thing; by reflex I picked a aluminum can off the ground. Stupid me, it belonged to Trudy at the Diner.
I dropped the can, thinking we'd be good. I guess that's not how you give it back. Trudy and son started shooting, so I ran. I figured I'd get a three day time out.

But like you, a day or so later I was at the Starlight Drive-in and heard shots. So I ran there and... Trashcan Carla was having a shoot out with Trudy & Son. DANG! I didn't know becoming enemies with Trudy made Trudy enemies with Carla. Carla was losing.

So I had to choose: Trudy who might sell in a few days or Carla who was a friendly merchant now. Sorry Trudy; she shouldn't have put her life on the line to for a stupid aluminum can already dropped.

Well, she was extremely convenient. Happened to be there almost every time I fast-traveled in.
Guess I can just kill the brahmin. Or, just let it do its route.
Hmm, you sure you didnt' accidentally shoot Carla? Because I'm pretty sure she has Protected status same as a settler. Which means she should just take a knee, YOU have to make the killing blow on her.

Oh, Im sure. I had not even fired a round before I found her body. Had to run up and over a hill to catch the other ones. I never could figure out what the Institute sent the synths for either.

Her wiki page does not mention anything about her having Protected or Essential status.

I never could figure out what the Institute sent the synths for either.

There is a random encounter spot nearby, and the encounters frequently walk down the road toward that intersection. That is all it was. So you could just assume it was a random patrol. Its also not all that far from the Switchboard, so you could also say they were on the look out for Railroad stragglers that got away.

Same thing happened to me with Cricket, at one point she was killed by the gunners, and so I never met her again- she never participates in my Trade caravan post, so sad

Oh well. Carla was an Institute Informant.
Openactorcontainer 1

Allows you to edit the inventory of NPC's. Like for example giving Traders and their caravan guards ballistic weave armour and decent weapons :)

Killing blow does happen, maybe they used grenades against synths.
I killed her once by laying mines inside Sanctuary.
There are console commands for revive if you want.

It doesn't mention it no, but she should be. I can double check next time I play if I remember. I have an enhanced console mod that lets me see an NPC's level, flags, perks etc.

EDIT: OKay, yep. Just checked and she's Protected. Here is a screenshot I took, showing her status in the enhanced console mod that shows flags and such.

maybe she died because you had not interacted with her yet, and chose the dialog to make her a merchant, which may then give her protected status? shes usually at the electrical tower between concorde and drumlin for me every time i meet up with her

Her base actor entry in the Creation Kit has the box for "Protected" ticked, so she should have Protected status right from the start unless something turns it off.

My own guess is that the breach in Protected status has to do with how the game sometimes randomly attributes attacks to the Sole Survivor and awards them XP even when they're not involved at all.

Yes, she was at the place near Drumlin when I found her. It is where she normally hangs out before meeting her.

when protected NPC die its 70% SS dmg and 30% a mod conflicting with the protection.
