Fallout 4

Can my GPU handle this game?
I made a post like this on here months ago but forgot the answers. I tried digging for it but couldn't find it. Sorry if I'm crowding the forums.

I have Fallout 4 for Xbox One but I wanna get it on Steam during the sale since PC has better mod support. Everything else checks out, but I'm a bit concerned for my GPU.

My specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor 3.59 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 550 2GB dedicated memory
8GB of RAM.

I know for a fact downtown Boston will likely be a nightmare, but I'm willing to try it out anyways. I also heard that FO4 runs like grease on AMD systems, and I wanted to know if this was true.

If it was a 4gb vram card rather than a 2gb one it might do okay? But it's noooot intended for this, your cpu is fine but the vram might be a problem on the card.

Honestly though if the game GOTY edition is available on deep sale right now, it's WELL worth just buying now and finding out, because then you'll have it.

Figured that would be it. I think I'm gonna buy it and try it out, I can always refund.

You're better off playing it on a console.

Here are the min specs, so should be ok, turn off weapon debris and godrays and run at min specs then tweak it, is my suggestion and see how you go.

CPU: Intel Core i5-2300 2.8 GHz/AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHz or equivalent
CPU SPEED: info
RAM: 8 GB
OS: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti 2GB/AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB or equivalent
PIXEL SHADER: 5.0
VERTEX SHADER: 5.0
FREE DISK SPACE: 30 GB
DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 2048 MB

Nice joke, console peasant.

So, this is something that I've been wondering about for a while now, but had no idea of where to look to find an answer. Is the Radeon HD 7870 better than the RX 550? Or can the 550 compare?

And I have 2048 MB of VRAM exactly. Will that be enough, or do I need more so it's not at the max?

The RX 550 is lesser than the HD 7870, but surpasses the GTX 550 Ti by a good margin.
edit - looks like it's a matter of opinion

I would suggest upgrade your GPU to at least GTX 1160 Ti tho

Looking at real benchmarks, I think you will have problems unless you play on lower than 1080p e.g. 720p and perhaps use low performance mods.

The 750ti 2gb gets around 60 fps at 1080p low settings
The 250x gets 35.

That would mean the 550 would get around 40 fps in low load areas, 20 downtown.
The cpu isn't ideal either.

If you want the pc version for mods, I wouldn't bother. Mods place extra load on both cpu and gpu. So your hardware isn't a suitable modding platform.

Note that new gpus might not have the right connectors for your monitor and your power supply would need to be checked as well.

Could I perhaps increase the FPS by tinkering with the graphics settings?

And how is my CPU not ideal? It's got eight cores.

The problem with a cpu paired with that video card is that it would have to do way more work and this game bottlenecks already.

Reducing your game's settings to bare minimum and working upwards until it plays decently enough to run around without being a slideshow would really be the only option. A video card with more vram would be better, paired with that one. the cpu is reasonably fast, but not necessarily 'the right' one for gaming.

I play on a Ryzen 5 2600X paired with a RX470 8GBwith factory OC (Sapphire nitro+) at 1080p. I can reach 60FPS most of the time. But i'm not sure, if a RXx50 with only 2GB would even reach half of that.

Maybe a look at that site can help you a bit: https://www.gpucheck.com/de-eur/compare/amd-radeon-rx-470-vs-amd-radeon-rx-550/intel-core-i7-6700k-4-00ghz-vs-intel-core-i7-7700k-4-20ghz/

Regarding to that site (with Fallout 4 benchmark) you should be able to play it, but you may not be able to use highest settings: https://www.hardwareluxx.de/index.php/artikel/hardware/grafikkarten/42851-3d-power-teilweise-fuer-unter-90-euro-drei-modelle-der-radeon-rx-550-im-test.html?start=22

Oops. I was looking at the i5-2300 mentioned above not the 3700x. A 3700x will be OK. Number of cores doesn't matter as FO4 only has 3 main threads. The main cpu attribute that is important for games is the single-thread speed.

Regarding settings, you could download a low res texture pack mod. Install with a mod manager and enable/disable when needed. The catch is that many mods use their own textures.

There are some rx550 vids on youtube with fps scores.
Without messing with INI files, you could absolutely run the game at largely medium settings with 2GB of VRAM, I've done it myself before with a GTX 950 and had precisely zero issue outside of engine based problems.

Should still change INI settings though to get the best you can, changing uGridsToLoad= in Fallout4.ini to 3 or 4 should help out as well.
