It is absolutely entirely possible to get out of it at any time, vanilla or not. I don't know why you'd imagine that you cannot move or jump or that your *companions* won't do that too - I've lost Nick at least twice to this stupid mission as he wound up inching away and finally over the edge.
OP it's at times like that when you just hit console and tcl back to the gondola. i know I've done it.

Or vault 75 when they are naked and arranged to show the way out of that rabbit warren.
EDIT: I mean, one that isn't so random, pointless, or depraved that almost no-one would seriously use it. Raider-style corpse signposts I could see getting some use.
