There's also Nordhagen Beach and Spectacle Island or Warwick Homestead and Spectacle Island. Of course, they're a bit close to the borderline.
Oberland station is also smallish, but big enough for a full size settlement. It's a short run to the northwest from Hangman's Alley. It's on a slope, with a flat bit in the center, and near the train tracks. It's also close to Greygardens.
Taffington, or Egret Tours? Both are nice. Taffington looks like it doesn't have much space, but you can build out over the water, I put a 5x8 power armor garage there, with repair bays for 20 suits. Egret Tours is one of my favorite settlements, definitely one of the prettiest in terms of scenery. Both are sort of near the center of the map, too.
Also for defenses, it really doesn't need walls, not sure why, but I never get hit by much there.

with Wasteland Workshop coming, I cannot wait to go further :D
Spectacle Island has issues with wandering settlers.
Abernathy is awesome, but gets quickly infected with the "double settler" bug that will go on to infect Sunshine Tidings as well.
County Crossing is good for a nice trade center. The Slog and Egret Tours Marina both have good base setups to build around (just markfordelete the barn doors in Egret or settlers get stuck).
Seconded. County Crossing is a great central location, and it is in the most densely populated sector of the game, with Finch Farms, Bunker Hill, The Slog, Taffington Boat House, Nordhagen Beach, and Greentop Nursery all just a short jog away. It's medium sized, and that puddle will hold several purifiers if you want to farm water there. It has an unscrappable tree you can build a cool treehouse in, and a decent field of fire on the approach vectors from the spawn points.
Unfortunately, you need to use the console to increase the settlement limit of The Castle in order to make it usable. The default limit really stifles what you can do otherwise.
As far as a personal hideaway is concerned, I've been using the Red Rocket gas station as a place to store all my good loot and companions. With Automatron, however, I'm in the process of moving them all to the Mechanist's Lair. Having my own secret robot factory lair is just too good to pass up.
Hangman's is the most central AFAICT but requires building multiple floors rather than letting you build large and flat. It'll be better off if you have Wasteland Workshop, as that will enable placing some flooring that will in turn allow crops on places that aren't the ground.
The Slog is there for the NE w/o being coastal, but be warned that it's in a pretty hostile neighborhood.
If you have the Automatron DLC, it offers what appears to be an extremely safe settlement location that's basically a larger, less-cozy, more convenient Home Plate -- it's still useless for settlers, but you can now connect it via supply lines, so you can store all your crafting materials there and use 'em elsewhere (or stash your spare weapons and ammunition, esp. if you're in survival beta and ammunition now weighs something).
