Idiot savant or high intellect?
What's better? Idiot savant with INT 1 or INT 10 without Idiot savant?

The constant proc sound of Idiot Savant is annoying. Also the lack of any Science or robot engineering is noticable. But that is my opinion I think the XP is pretty close between them.

Fun fact: No matter what your INT is, you get enough experience to make an appreciable difference by taking Idiot Savant.

But to answer your question, I'm like 90% sure 1 INT and Idiot Savant win hands down. Idiot Savant is an absurdly powerful perk.

I actually watched a video about that on Youtube, and in the end it was better to max out Int. AND get Idiot Savant mk. II, believe it or not. The increased XP from the intelligence balances out the less of a chance from Idiot Savant. I don't remember the exact rate but I think it's like 140-175% more experience points?

By themselves their about even, but I recommend maxing intelligence so you unlock other perks.

I remember reading somewhere that some people did a comparison and played the same quests and did mainly all the same things. It seems INT still gives more exp, but then again Idiot Savant can proc on stupid things like settlement building(Placing Objects) lol. Besides INT has Gun Nut, Medic, Science, Robotics Expert, which are all great perks used both in and outside of combat, and settlement building. Although I feel Idiot Savant might actually better exp for early game.

Oh and like @troy_cummings says both work, it's a weird thing because then the bonus exp from your INT also gets doubled or tripled when it procs, just less often.

Average was 150% at Intelligence 1 and about 140-146% at Intelligence 10.

For Normal game...doesn't really matter much. Savant gives bursts of XP spasmodically.
On survival? INT. CHEMIST for antibiotics. Nothing worse than having your XP regen shafted with a 50% reduction and not have antibiotics on hand.

Agreed, on survival INT wins from Chemist (antibiotics) and Nerd Rage (lifesaver), which I consider mandatory perks unless you want to play the entire game in stealth. Plus Idiot Savant makes a really annoying sound.

That said, if you are wiling to save scrub a lot, max int + Idiot Savant II can give crazy bonuses on quests... might help for a pacifist run. Pretty sure plenty of "Dumb" Idiot mods will come out once steam workshop mods are supported.

According to research conducted on the xp difference, the highest XP comes from Int 1 and Max Luck Idiot Savant. However you lose out on gun nut, science and robotics. Once you start delving into Int for the crafting perks you are better off focusing on maxing int before Luck for idiot savant.

There's a chart that shows xp gain, and int 10 and savant loses by a small margin over int 1 + savant.

Edit: I'm sure that it works out for the better though. Being able to spec into the int tree is far more valuable than not touching it at all.

I started my currently play through with maxed CHA and Luck, INT at 1 and took Idiot as my first perk. (Hard mode, although I don't think that makes any difference).

Was actually good fun... right until I realised I could only hack basic computers and really wanted that suit of X-01 power armour behind that Advanced locked computer gate.

My gut feel is that yes, you do race up the levels. It only takes Idiot to kick in a few times when finishing a quest and bang, you start rolling in XP. Currently I am at Lv 50 and are still to get around to rescuing Nick Valentine. What may have been making a difference is that during this play through I decided to never use Fast Travel and have been walking everywhere. By having to cross the Commonwealth phsically you end up having a lot more casual combats which probably has pushed my XP count up a lot more than it might otherwise. The high CHA is probably giving me a lot more XP for speech checks as well.

Currently my INT is 4 as I decided I needed the hacking perks. You do end up lacking most of the cool crafting related perks so I have done next to none of that this character.

Been enjoying this character (apart from that sodding stupid sound effect) but once survival mode comes out of Beta I think I will start a new character with more a balanced starting SPECIAL.

best thing to do when you start your build at 1 int,is at some point saving at least 9 point and put them all at once in int at end game instead of 1 per lvl gain.you will be saving a lot of xp this way

Higher luck affects idiot savant?

Since its a luck perk i would assume yes, better chance to trigger but ive never confirm this.On the wiki they do not say anything about it.Best way would be to start a new game and go for 10 luck with idiot savant and start building stuff and look at the number of time its popup vs a build with only 5 luck.Tbh 10 luck build wouldnt be viable at survival since you gonna miss a lot of perk due to + 5 in luck.
