Sorry but if your trying to be a "Good Guy" your not going to get along with MacReady.
quicksave once you get the [MacCready Liked That] box and then quickload back. this will remove the affinity cooldown and you can steal another thing and do it again until he loves you.
What you can do however, is download this mod No Negative Affinity and No Affinity Cooldown by ricky horror [www.nexusmods.com].
I personally use just No Affinity Cooldown, but you can use the option so that they like everything. That way you don't have to be a criminal. Not to mention it saves you a lot of time.
Without crime? doing what? ^^

He likes when you help the Minutemen or being sarcastic in conversations. Also persuade helps I think.
You can check all about it at the Wiki.
Help him when he asks for help and just bring him along on every mission. I don't steal or take anything in red or pick red locks, just doing the "right" thing and he'll come around. For me strong was the worst to get the perk because he hates everything except smashing stuff.
According to the wiki, he likes when you stay in your settlements for long periods, and when you build stuff, so no, you don't need to be evil to get him to idolize you.
that's just because every companions level will rise just by spending time with him.
be it in settlements or while doing quests, it doesn't matter.
it's just a very slow process ;)
if you are a bad guy (and not afraid of using "exploits") he is very easy to get to max.
just do a certain quest in GN (warehouses), steal everything you find in there and do a quicksave/quickload after every theft.
he'll talk to you the first time before the first third of the quest is over ;)
if you interrupt the quest to do his, he'll be yours before the GN quest is over.
since it's not what the OP is asking for, i put it in spoiler tags ;)
I know that and about the exploit too but the problem is his perk is useful for my good guy sniper, which isn't best when having a loose RP character :D
