How accurate can we make a real life pip boy?
I've always wanted a pip boy. It's such an awesome thing. But I've always wondered. How accurate can we make the pip-boy in real life with current technology. And how much would it cost then. And do functional pip-boys exist?

You're talking about smart watches, and where they might be in a few years.

Also that thing on Leela's arm in Futurama.

Wearable all in one computers. Yep, they're coming. They prolly won't look like a 1950s "future retro" clunky thing, though. (Goes for Futurama too.)

Also before people just say "umh pre order pip-boy + phone" I mean an accurate one where the buttons function on it. Ofcourse for modernity it should have touch screen and an "smartphone" mode. But that should be under the pip boy coating

Suggest to Apple that they get into a deal with Bethesda. It'd just be the style. Maybe the buttons could work too along with the touchscreen, for certain functions.

I get that smart watches exist. But I mean a pip boy. I'd definitely prefer the clunky pip boy over a smart watch. It's way cooler. And I love retro style tech

Already got those dude.

Would be expensive but quite easy if you have lots of $€£$€£$€£, make a custom app, a wrist strap that isn't just plastic and a phone or mini tablet with lots of functionality available that can be programmed in.

Of course, you probably wouldn't want needles going into your body monitoring for diseases, rads are easy to detect though... But you need lots more $€£$€£ for that.

I don't really like the idea but we definitely have the technology to do it without question.

As I said, it'd just be a portable computer, and I don't see why it couldn't have everything your smart phone/tablet does. You'd just have to get someone to make the case/band, and put the electroincs in it. Of course, it'd be stuck with old Hercules monitor style look, but there could be some way to access "pip boy mode" (perhaps with a button) with more limited (ASCII-only) functionality in the GUI OS.

Let's not get apple to make one. An android base would be better. But the features I'm curious about are the stats items and map stuff

Agreed on that, Apple and Microsoft would try to own your life even more than they do already... So instead of windows 10 being forced down your throat it would be windows 20 forced up your blood veins with nanites and RFID chips ahaha

No Apple fan either, they're just the only ones I heard of with them. I don't think they'd be useful enough for my tastes yet, maybe in 5 years or so.

Stats? There's apps for health monitoring (translated to ascii-only hercules) monitor, maps .. would suck just like they do in Beth games, so there's that ...

Items, your daykeeper app.

I assume you mean smart watches. If not. And it is a genuine pip boy. How much does it cost

If you're talking 1:1 translations of all the features of the in-game pipboy: Basically impossible except for the most mundane features.

What we see of the Pipboy has all the medical monitoring capability of a mood ring. The most it could do as we see it is check your heart rate based on the pulse in your wrist.

Functioning as a logbook for items (the inventory) is a simple matter, but many of its features would have to be hand programmed. A wrist-mounted computer isn't going to be able to automatically detect the total weight of what it's attached to. You would have to personally input how much weight the items you're carrying weigh. A pre-cached list could be used to auto-calculate weight in the future, but you would still have to manually tick off the items as being present, which means your cutting edge toy is actually a glorified calculator.

GPS is simple. So simple there's plenty of better ways to use it already.

Really the Real-Life pipboy would be a heavy, clunky, smartphone that has to be worn around your arm isntead of conveiniently put in a backpack or pocket.

And then the holotape reader would just be a cd drive. What other features does a pip boy have?

With a Hercules monitor and ASCII capabalities only. That alone would limit it, even if it had proper health monitors, GPS and some sort of built-in scale.

And I'd still use it.
