Each settler needs to have 1 unit of defense, and also 1 unit of food or water per day. The food or water may come from other settlements via the trade routes.

Yes as far as I know from what I have read each settler uses 2 food per day.

Each settlement usually gets up to around 20 settlers.
If you build all the stores thats 6.
If you add artillery thats 1 per placement. I usually build 2 artillery in each settlement, so we are up to 8.
I usually use 1 ot 2 to supply lines so thats 10 or 1/2 the settlement.
That leaves 10 settlers with nothing to do but work crops. Which will give you 60 food.

If not working crops what else can they do. If I have missed something else you can assign them to please point it out as I always have settlers standing around with nothing to do. And they are happier when they have a job.

each settler consumes 1 food. some crops produce only 0.5 food, so you need 2 of such crops per settler.

Build some scavenging stations and guard posts. Assign spare settlers to those.

You can assign settlers to scavenging duties by building the scavenger station under resources MISC.

Excess food placed into your workshop depends on your excess food production. Months ago someone posted the formula, it was something like you get 50% of the excess food production placed into your workshop. Then it randomly assign among the food type grown.

So basically if you are growing the bare minimum you will not get much of anything placed into your workshop.

Happiness wise it is 1 defense per 5 food production, and 0 defense for water production. This is for happiness, not chance of being raided. You can find this out with the console command for safety rating (getav 1e3272 on the workshop.) This is also may have changed in the survival beta update, and unfortunately there is no console commands to verify it still works the same.

It seems that way the way excess food production is calculated. happiness wise it is 1 unit per day. Settlers will also eat tatos before eating any other foods.

Settlement population is CHA +10, the maxium legitimate population is 42 settlers.

Not having a job will not affect happiness.

If a setler goes too long without a job they will force themselves into farming by taking crop production form other settlers in the process. Which basically means you can end up have 8 settlers working 24 food production which should only take 4 settlers.

If a settler does not have a job they act as an inferior scavenger. However due to them forcing themselves onto crops this rarely happens anymore.

Wow good info...thank you all...so if I grow muti fruit mostly, I only need one per settler at one food per day? Since the fruit counts as 1?
