Now or never perks
After 500 hours of play with quite a few restarts (highest level so far just over 30) I've found I can't design a character without these "take as soon as possible" perks.

2 Fortune Finder 1/4
3 Scrounger 1/4
4 Cap Collector 1/3

This investment so early in the game is really critical IMO to a solid play through. I know by mid-late game ammo/caps might be in huge supply BUT if you ever plan to take these perks it should be as soon as you can... period. There would be zero reason to take any of these three after the first 3 levels because of diminished returns.

How many FO players loot every single container they come across? Well these first two perks make the 80% of empty containers contain "something". For a OCD clear out every container player it would be silly not to take these on your first two level ups.

Cap Collector early on so I'm getting a better deal dumping loot and shopping if need be. Also so I can build Emporiums later.. might as well take it early so when I am higher level I free up a higher level perk.

I also take the follow up ranks as soon as possible in the first two mentioned...

Last point, the fact that there is no level cap if you plan on a long term character might as well reap these benefits from Day 1 of leaving Sanctuary.... it might make some playthroughs a little tougher for an hour or so but I promise you its worth it! And I have only played on Survival.

Are there any other perks like these 3 that would display "dimishing returns" if taken later... I can't think of any ATM.

That's pretty cool. I thought they just made more of the same junk. Now I'll have to try them.

I've just gone for never, don't have any of those at level 70 and never wished I had them
Idiotic savent, so get boost asap. I still get sometimes, even my INT is 10.

but I promise you its worth it!
Why? You have not given any reason why they are a good thing - all you have done is explain how the game developers are wasting your time. A perk you have to take is a wasted perk, and it's a shame that Fallout 4 is full of them - even basic things like global crafting inventory require grinding XP to make the game not broken.

long term character
Don't forget to recite the entire phone book of China every time you take a step for maximum time wasted enjoyment

Meh, game gives you so much money and stuff, and no penalty at all for farming it over time from your settlement. Just skip a day and sell the food/water. With essentially effortless cash you can just buy anything you need desperately from a junk vendor and settle for the low-hanging fruit. I even stopped lockpicking containers at the midgame, just because of the time suck of it.

Ah, that makes sense! I haven't used this one yet... I have a hard time visualizing my highly intellegient characters having this perk. In fact it is so contraditory it almost erks me.

Idiot Savant should have a INT 1-2 requirement IMO. If you raise INT above that you should lose the perk, otherwise it just doesn't make any sense!

I prefer to invest in other perks since caps, ammo and junk is so easy to get at the beginning of the game.

just because you are highly intelligent does not mean you are smart in all areas of life

IMHO, it's best to stick with Scrounger, not Caps Collector
because you can sell ammo for caps or other items AND shoot with it! ;)

Idiot Savant IMHO isn't worth it
better to raise Intelligence fast as you can, while getting vital perks as well
~Scrapper (so breaking down all the enemy loot nets you something decent, AND highlights containers with items, AND with mods it highlights dead enemies)
~Scrounger
~Locksmith
~hacker

Idiot Savant takes essentially 3 perks, I'd rather take +3Int instead, it's guranteed ALWAYS boost and unlocks other useful perks! ;)

My first character that finished one of the endings i never used vats, or any of the perks you list.
I've done multiple restarts aswell, only ones I see as a MUST have, are lockpicking/hacking. Even then you could most likely go without.

Never taken those perks once. Caps, ammo, and junk are too easy to come by to waste points on them. Any perk gives you diminishing returns at higher levels. The closer you are to the end of the game, the less you will use the perk.

those three are not bad but 1/8 into the game you have so much stuff i think its pointless then. I mean, caps are very easy to get. The only thing I felt you should raise high/get would be Int/Chr. lockpicking/hacking is high on the list too, though you can take your time in lvl hacking.
Okra Apr 14, 2016 @ 12:20pm
Lockpick and hacking are not MUST have, they don't really give access to anything usefull. You will get extra chem and other loot, some power armor and maybe a few shortcuts, but overall its quite useless since all that is already available pretty much everywhere. My first playthrough I had these perks but once i got Cait and Valentine i could unlock pretty much anything and with Automatron you can give mods to your robot for that. On my survivor mod run, i ignored all these perks and was real fine.
They are not bad perk to have, I think these perks can be used if you dont know where to put points in late game.

I get bugged by doors I can't get into. Even though I found they're generally sucker-bait. But it's pretty easy to console-open most locked doors. That's how I found about the sucker-bait, heh. Really high-level lock, last place to check in some area - no terminal. Hacked in. All there was was ... not even crappy .38 ammo, just two pieces of junk, and maybe a stimpak. Got myself worked up for nothing. :)

I love the hacking mini-game though (especially once I garnered how to do it from lurking 'round here - I had no idea about the parentheses trick). Gotta get the hacking high so I can play all the terminals.
