I also use a modified silent 10mm for infiltration wet work.
Fat man is other best long range weapon, clear the area and don't worry about it. You'll miss some interesting things with this method though since it will throw all the loot around - teddy bears don't like to fly.
Be careful with the explosive mod on smg's, you might end up killing yourself/pissing off your companions.
Never used a melee weapon, the melee combat in bethesda's games is sad at best.
Vault 81 has a great sniper rifle - I use a mod that fixes the .50 cal to be more powerful than the .308
Alien blaster for pistol.
Another best melee weapon could also be a Stunning Super Sledge (alliteration, yay!) - which is one of the most brutal weapons to be attacked by, especially by a Legendary Super Mutant Warlord on Survival mode...
There is always a pipe rifle modded well as a sniper in a house looking out over the big parking area in the SE of Lexington. Early on, it does the job and is easy to upgrade.
Hunting Rifle is the generic sniping weapon, and fully upgraded is a beast. There is one guarateed on the roof of the Red Rocket on the north edge of Cambridge already decently upgraded.
Combat Rifle also does a great job if upgraded for it, but only spawns randomly at much higher levels. There is a spectacular unique one at Vault 81 for sale, however. The radium rifle was added by Far Harbor and is essentially an even better combat rifle - which was kind of curious since the combat rifle was already one of the best all-around weapons.
The initial hit with the combat knife cuts away a large chunk of health if not intant kill. Couple more fast swings or vats if it's a deathclaw or radscorpion an it's over.
The Old Reliable fires 2 shots so it's usually 1shot kills.
Some guns lose effectiveness as you get higher in level, like Overseers Gaurdian starts getting wimpy at level 50 i think, the second bullet get no buffs.
