Best weapon?
I was wanting to know what the best weapons are. What is the best sniper, medium melee weapon, heavy melee, pistol, light weight automatic weapon?

The one I use the most is a modified combat rifle which shoots .45 rounds. I prefer open glow sights and a recoil compensation stock. It holds 20 rounds with the largest clip and is powerful and accurate.

I also use a modified silent 10mm for infiltration wet work.

Tracking mod on the 4 barrel missile launcher is best long range weapon!
Fat man is other best long range weapon, clear the area and don't worry about it. You'll miss some interesting things with this method though since it will throw all the loot around - teddy bears don't like to fly.

Be careful with the explosive mod on smg's, you might end up killing yourself/pissing off your companions.

Never used a melee weapon, the melee combat in bethesda's games is sad at best.

Vault 81 has a great sniper rifle - I use a mod that fixes the .50 cal to be more powerful than the .308

Alien blaster for pistol.

My current favorite weapon is a Plasma Infused Radium Rifle. Used the weapon bench to craft it to the most powerful automatic possible and gave it a reflex sight, and it tears most things up really fast. It even handles stuff that is immune to radiation well, but just destroys humans and anything else that is vulnerable to radiation damage.

A good gauss rifle can be potent if you have all the perks, but it's a dedicated sniping weapon unsuitable for engagements. I'm using an Instigating laser rifle because the damage is decent and it weighs next to nothing.

Best pistol is probably Deliverer or the Alien Blaster.

My favorite melee weapon is Shem Drowne's, but I also like Kevmh's special upgrade with a Mighty machete. I think my exact ideal would be a Relentless Revolutionary Sword. Honorable mentions to Pickman's. I have yet to obtain the special Children of Atom's supersledge, but my guess is that is the "best" heavy.

Best automatic is hands-down Pray and Spray, although one of the many "unlimited ammo" lasers converted to an automatic is pretty fun too and weighs a lot less. 10mm converts to a nice automatic. A legendary pipe rifle with a per shot damage buff (exploding, irradiated, freezing etc) is both easy to find and can effectively be used wantonly with how much .38 ammo you'll find.
Atom's Judgement is a Beast of a weapon. With 10 strength, maxed melee weapons and Nuclear Physicist (spelling?) does around 900 damage. Whats weird is that it says it deals "100 radiation damage" but with the 100% damage bonus it does around 680 damage.
Another best melee weapon could also be a Stunning Super Sledge (alliteration, yay!) - which is one of the most brutal weapons to be attacked by, especially by a Legendary Super Mutant Warlord on Survival mode...

Other than the Gause Rifle, what is the best long range gun and where can it be found?

There is always a pipe rifle modded well as a sniper in a house looking out over the big parking area in the SE of Lexington. Early on, it does the job and is easy to upgrade.

Hunting Rifle is the generic sniping weapon, and fully upgraded is a beast. There is one guarateed on the roof of the Red Rocket on the north edge of Cambridge already decently upgraded.

Combat Rifle also does a great job if upgraded for it, but only spawns randomly at much higher levels. There is a spectacular unique one at Vault 81 for sale, however. The radium rifle was added by Far Harbor and is essentially an even better combat rifle - which was kind of curious since the combat rifle was already one of the best all-around weapons.

My current favorite weapons are a x2 damage on full health targets combat knife an the Old Reliable 45/70 from Far Harbor DLC

The initial hit with the combat knife cuts away a large chunk of health if not intant kill. Couple more fast swings or vats if it's a deathclaw or radscorpion an it's over.

The Old Reliable fires 2 shots so it's usually 1shot kills.

Do the mission where you have to deal with the Runaway Follower of Atom. It doesn't matter if you kill them or persuade them to leave the island, either works. After you either kill or persuade to leave the island you go back and talk to the Richter -i think his name is - and tell him you've dealt with her, then he gives you Atom's Judgement as a reward.

Talk to Richter. It's the first mission he gives you.

Everybody is giving you examples of THE VERY BEST weapons you can find. I'll give you examples of very good weapons that are available everywhere until you get those special versions. For melee, I use the bladed board which is enhanced by maxing out the Big League perk. For the assault weapon class, I use the 5.56 aassault rifle with a medium scope and a .45 combat rifle with a suppressor and night vision scope for those sneak around night missions. For sniper rifles there are a .308 and .50 marksman versions. The .308 is actually a more practical weapon but the .50 has a great noise when the sound is turned up ( BABOOM ). Both assault weapons and sniper rifles benefit from the Rifleman perk. I tend to stay away from minigun, rocket weapons and Fatman stuff simply because I play on Survival mode and all of those weapons and their accompanying ammo carry a huge weight penalty. I find the combat shotgun with the 32 round magazine to be very usefull when suddenly confronting a large number of enemies or a big powerful enemy. Even if you shoot them and don't kill them you can knock them down and kill others around them, keeping a bunch from overwheming you. I think the Rifleman perk applies to this weapon also. There are plenty of upgraded versions that are more powerful, lighter, faster firing or loading, but, you do have to hunt for them or complete special missions. My first playthrough gave me a bladed board that did 50% more damage against mutants or super mutants ... WHACKWHACKWHACK ... TAKETHAT ,,, YAHAHAHAHAHA... that was fun. I never did fool with energy weapons much, so, I can't give you any real guidance on those and as far as pistols I used to use the 10mm pistol, suppressed for ghouls and such until I started using my suppressed, night vision combat rifle instead.

the plastic knife for sure.
LAZERFACE Jul 10, 2016 @ 1:28am
For me i love broadsider, it is huge damage and i think huge fun, if you spec for it. Old Faithful is sick if you use it right. Rightous Authority with a crit build is crazy in vats. I think Gatling Lazers are so OP, I never use them. The Last Minute and shoot arms off, boring but strong.
Some guns lose effectiveness as you get higher in level, like Overseers Gaurdian starts getting wimpy at level 50 i think, the second bullet get no buffs.

i have a 2 shot guass rifle, its pretty nice
