I've got over 1,400 hours in this game but my memory might have betrayed me a little on a salient point: According to an external source[fallout.fandom.com], applying any but the correct color will not successfully terminate the mission…yet, without using cheats—only my fully expanded Charisma—I just painted the wall with yellow paint, and got paid for successfully completing the side mission.

It shouldn't have worked, but it did.

you can use any color, gives 100 caps reward. If you do the quest the right way and mix and use green, you can get 200-300 caps (persuade checks). It isn't a major quest, and the difference in 100-300 caps? nothing. Do the quest fast and get it out of the way, if you an explorer you'll stumble over the hardware store anyway.

Return to Diamond City and use the paint on the wall. Painting the wall blue or yellow will result in a reward of 100 caps from Abbot. Painting the wall green will result in a reward of 200 caps (300 if passing all the speech checks).

You should actually read your source.

Thanks for contributing. The odd thing is that on previous run-throughs (during previous playthroughs), I remember something else happening: Once applying the wrong color, being given the opportunity to correct my mistake. This is the first time it's worked out for me this way.

I personally would have loved it, if in the game you used the wrong color, the wall would change colors to what you used. The Yellow wall, Blue wall, etc lol.

I did it blue one game and the people started complaining about the color.
