Would be nice if paint jobs for power armor didn't take up the same slot as the super important coatings
I'd like to be able to give my armor a paint job (any paint job), but I can't because the Prism coating is entirely superior to it, rendering my x-01 suit permanently a drab dark greyish black.

I agree.
Although, I suppose it would be possible to mod each modification to have it's own color/texture, as I have a set of X-01 power armor too, and it must look exactly like yours, the drab greyish black.

I imagine (hoping) it would just involved extracting the textures for each modification, and coloring them to your liking, or possibly even just extracting the pain job colors, and the modification colors, and manually renaming the paint job colors, to the modification colors and moving them to the proper folder.

Theoretically something like this

Data\textures\PA\paintjob\flames.dds
Data\textures\PA\prism\prism.dds

and just taking and renaming "prism.dds to "prism.dds.derp, and then copying "flames.dds" from Data\textures\PA\painjob\ to Data\textures\PA\prism\ and then renaming it from "flames.dds to "prism.dds"

*WARNING*, all of the files and paths I just used are hypothetical, I'm not sure what the ACTUAL filepaths and names would be, however, it DOES explain how easy it would be to change the color

A solid suggestion, I took a quick look, and i think to change the textures around would require decompiling the ba2 files in the fallout 4 directory, since they aren't just sitting in a Textures folder somewhere (I do have a Textures folder, but it's stuffed full of stuff for my various mods)

Yup! You're definitely on the right wavelength!

The utility is called BAE (Bethesda Archive Extractor), which would let you just extract ONLY the textures you need, rather than the entire Ba2.

FINDING the textures you want in the BA2 is going to be up to you, as I haven't really dug into their Ba2s too much, but that's the very first step into what you're looking to do

:tgrin:

I'm a programmer, I think it's just time to pony up and make a mod.
Something that lets you apply any unlocked effect to any unlocked paint job

Check Nexus.

There is a mod which seperates the paint jobs from the materials.

Hunh, I had but I didn't see anything that was doing exactly what I was planning on doing, but I'll take another gander. I'll probably finish this one and publish it anyways, even if someone already is, just to say "aha I did it" and encourage myself to make more.
