What is with the fps cap?! [SOLVED]
SOLUTION ---> POST #19

Stop giving me advice that has already been given/tried.

So I've just brushed off my copy of Fallout 4 to play over the summer, and I keep getting issues. I recently bought a new 144hz gaming monitor, and found that Fallout 4 wanted to cap my fps at 144. Knowing my build can't handle that, I went into the display settings for my monitor and set the refresh rate to 60hz. It worked great, no stutters or framedrops the rest of the session.

Then I stop and come back to find my fps capped at 30. So I switch the monitor refresh rate back to 120hz, and all seems right running at 60fps. But now whenever I get into a fight, my fps goes all over the place and I get wrecked by bloatflies and mole rats.

It was working as expected before, and now I'm starting to get salty. Anyone know how to deal with this?

I don't know and I don't care to know because this game sucks. You would be wise to just uninstall Fallout 4 and never go back. It's crap.

Any actual advice? Come on everyone, it was running great yesterday!

Haha, good one.

What are your system specs?

The fps in the creation engine is really weird. It's capped at 60 because alot of the things in the game are based off of the fps. If it were to go over 60, the game itself would speed up, and other things would start to break.

GTX 970

I'm telling you, I know this rig can run Fallout 4 at 60fps. I didn't have to change any settings to keep my fps constant when it was first released, and I don't understand why it's giving me issues now.

I am well aware of this, which is why I am looking for a way to lock my monitor to 60hz and also have Fallout 4 run at 60fps. I literally did this yesterday and had no issues, but now it seems that Fallout 4 wants to run at half my refresh rate.

I had the game reset some graphics settings on me for no apparent reason one time. And actually, now that I think about it, I think it reset on me when I downloaded the beta for survival. Did you download the beta by any chance?

Anyhow, there's a couple settings in the options that impact performance in big ways. Turn "Weapon Debris" down, its a PhysX accelerated particle system. Its actually called "FLex," which is Nvidia's new tech.

Even with my 980 SC, I get fps drops with "Weapon Debris" on. Another thing you can check is V-sync in the Nvidia control panel. Make sure you have it enabled, or your fps in-game will be uncapped. You've got a 144hz screen, so it has a range of refresh rates the game may be choosing at random. Next, make sure V-sync is on in the options before launching.

So yeah, make sure vsync is forced through both Nvidia control panel, and the game settings. Also, unless you already did this, a computer restart wouldn't be a bad thing to try.

I throttle my frames at the card at around 90 FPS and then disable VSYNC from the FO4 ini's. Some people say they can go as high as 110 before seeing physics glitches but I haven't seen any problems at 90 so far and most of the things I've read have said 90 is pretty safe.

To disable VSYNC in the game, edit BOTH Fallout4Prefs.ini files and change iPresentInterval=0. Then enable VSYNC at the card and set the Frame Limiter to whatever frames you want. For NVIDIA cards you use NVIDIA Inspector and there's a pretty straightforward tutorial on youtube for setting frame limits. I don't know about other cards.

Oh jesus dude don't tell people to make their INIs read only. You know how many people had issues undoing their mod ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ due to read only ini files when Far Harbor hit? And WTF is ipresetinterval 2? That will lock him at 120.

-_- yeah 2 fool , cuts the frames in half for 72 frames on 144hz noob.
Read only so it doesn't change....noob

Your advice is as bad as your typing. You have no idea how their rig is configured at the hardware level and you're telling them to double the frame limiter and then lock the files up.
Defektiv May 25, 2016 @ 8:11pm
Oh god, not another person who doesn't read anything and gets defensive about anything said to them. What is it with you google trained IT people?
Nite69 May 25, 2016 @ 8:18pm
set the Nvidia Control Panel to half adaptive vsync (it will limit it to 72fps and you won't get the drop to 30 like normal vsync does)

if on an AMD card I'm not sure.

Okay, lots of advice was given here. Most of it I've already tried, sadly.

Duderestart - please go give bad advice to people who don't know what they're doing, or just get off the forums entirely.

I did find a fix that worked for my nvidia system, that I found on a seperate thread, by =VOC= Rockit:

"Try this it helped me getting at 60 fps cap

Go to your Desktop, right click the Nvidia Logo at the lower Right of your Desktop. Choose "System Settings" or whatever it is in your Language. Now go to "3D Settings" and Add Fallout.exe to your Programs.

There change "Triple Buffer" to ON.
"Max frames render ahead" to 1.
And finally "V-Sync" on."

It has worked beautifully, and I'm getting no framerate variations around Sanctuary like I was with 60fps/120hz settings.
