Sooo, Pets Count Against Pop Limit?
Wish i had known this earlier, but dogs and cats count against your settlement limit??? I knew robots did, and that at least made, I dunno, some tiny bit of sense, but a dog or cat that just provides happiness counts???

(Well, now that I think about it, IIRC a dog also adds a little defense, right? 2 or 5 or something? Still, I had no idea they would count against your limit (10 + CH).

Some of my settlements have reached their pop limits and I can't add dogs (or cats I presume) because of it. Just bought a dog and over half of my settlements were greyed out as choices to send it to and the only reason I could see was that they had reached my current pop limit (10 + 6 CHARISMA = 16).

So, I guess my only hope of adding that happiness to those settlements now is to either raise my CHARISMA or send a settler from a settlement at 16 to one less than 16? Man I wish I had known this. I would've turned of all off my radio beacons when they got within 2 of my max so I could add the stupid dog (and cat, I've heard cats can be added but haven't found out how yet. Please no spoilers unless it's tell me cats can't in fact be added, then I'll know that).

That is strange. I have 8 people living at Sanctuary. My charisma is 10. I bought 10 dogs from Gene. They all live there in doghouses in a neat square. Population count still says 8.

They add 5 defense each. My defense is 60 with 2 turrets on the bridge. They do a very good job of defending in an attack, too. Together with Codsworth they can kill any super mutants getting too close.

Still showing a population of 8 is strange. So maybe they don't count? I can't figure out why it wouldn't let me send them to all of those settlements then. I checked the ones that were greyed out, and each of them had reached 16 population so I just assumed that's what it meant.

Anyone have any ideas what else it could be if dogs (and cats) don't count against population count? Because it sure wouldn't let me send that dog to the settlements I wanted to. It seems all of bigger settlements are the ones that have happiness issues so I wanted to send it to one of those. But nope, all of them were greyed out.

I have 40 cats at sanctuary and I don't mod so I think it might be on your end, Are you using mods?

Dogs don't count as population, but the overall population limits when you can send a dog to a settlement. The "move to settlement" command appears to look at number of settlers regardless of what is actually being moved there, which makes a certain amount of sense since the only things it works on are settlers and dogs, and there are a lot more settlers than dogs.

Absolutely no mods whatsoever.

Okay, so dogs don't count as population, but if you've met your population limit you can't add dogs. Did I read you right?

Why Bethesda, why?? It's annoying little glitches like this that you will almost certainly not fix, and if I complain about it a hundred fanboys will drop in and insult me, my family, me ancesters, and my dog saying you make great big games and it's urneasonable to expect that you could get everything to work right. Yet, somehow, communities of modders always seem to get most, if not all, of those stupid glitches fixed (see Morrowind, Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Oblivioin, and Skyrim). Yeah, it's unreasonable to expect you to fix everything when modders, without access to the basic code, seem to do it every time.

Well, once this character dies and i have to start again, I'll remember to turn off my beacons when they get withone one of my limit. Because you know, it's unreasonable of me to demand that Bethesda fix this BUG.

It is annoying when you don't know it's there, but being aware of it helps, at least. I got used to having to use Grape Mentats and other Charisma-boosting supplies when I wanted to add a dog to an established settlement. One way around the limit is to build a dog cage - they will trap Junkyard Dogs sometimes, especially closer to Sanctuary, and auto-assign to the settlement they are released at.

Knowing of this limit helped spur me to add dogs to my Far Harbor settlements before they started getting many settlers at them.

They don't count as population but they help with happyness.

"They don't count as population but they can't be added when you're at your population limit."

FTFY.

Yeah, I know they add happy, that' s why I wanted to add the dog. As a bonus, dogs also add 5 defense. If you can add them. If you haven't reached your population limit.

Grape Mentabs are your friend

10 charisma + special book (1) + bobblehead (1) + cahrisma gear (sharp legendary both arms (2) + dress (2) + newsboy cap (1) + grapementats (5)

so 22 total.

And then, once you have 32 settlers there (10 +22), you CAN'T ADD A DOG. Despite dogs not counting against population. This is why it should be fixed.

ADDED IN EDIT: Yes one could take grape mentats and add clothing, and STILL, once they reach that new limit, they won't be able to add a dog.

Yeah that sounds like a real problem. One easily solved using the console, but I am sure its very REAL to you.
