Where Is The Red Death???
Shoving off with the Mariner I arrive in total darkness. Head toward the little target flag. I can make out dark green murkiness all around me. Turning on my power armor headlight does nothing to relieve the lack of sight.

Do I start this at the bottom of the ocean at night?

There should be a very obvious and noticable red light. If you can't see that red light, something has bugged.

No spoilers, but this quest was a huge failure of a punch line anyway.

Try it without power armor.
Your a little over prepared.
Just a smidge.

Can't see a red glow. The game said I had reached my destination, and I should talk to the Mariner. But I can't see the Mariner.

I've tried this twice now. One more try, then drop back and punt. At least I depopulated Far Harbor of all The Children Of Atom.

I swear when Mariner gave me this quest I thought it would be the leaked squid/octopus creature, an underwater fight... instead I got THAT.

But on topic It sounds like you're having a graphic bug, the fadeout to black when you travel to the island may not have gone away as it was supposed to.

Only thing I can suggest is restart your game and load the last save you have before you left on the boat to find it.

I've tried it twice. This last time I took off the power armor. All was still dark. When the Mariner said to take it out I fired blindly a few times, and I guess it died. Mariner gave me a jacket. Still blind I tried to fast travel somewhere, but when I got there all was still black.

Wierd quest.

On the last try I got it to work. This time I actually walked down to the dock instead of fast travelling to it. I still couldn't find my boat to sail back to Far Harbor, but when I fast travelled I was able to see when I got there.

Sounds like these islanders have too fervent an imagination. Maybe the fog's not as bad as they make it out to be.

having the same problem. what is the fix?

I ran into this issue myself. For some reason, when the screen fades to black, it doesn't fade back in once you've been moved to your destination.

What I ended up doing was opening my map while I was blinded, fast-traveling to another location, and using "VATS" mode to target an NPC. That immediately restored my vision, and dispelled the darkness.

I then fast-traveled as close to Red Death Island as I could, and swam back out there. The Mariner and Red Death were waiting for me, and the quest proceeded as normal.

When the quest was complete, the quest prompt told me to "get back on my boat and return to Far Harbor", but my boat wasn't actually present. Instead, there was a quest-marker pointing toward a spot where my boat should have been - but I was still able to interact with the invisible controls, which then returned me to Far Harbor.

I didn't have any problems with the red death mission, was cute actually lol

I'd like to see someone do a mod to add these as enemys around the game though, kinda like the mini mirelurks
