When you get a message like that, just reload the save just prior to you fast traveling, then go directly to the settlement that you now know is gonna get attacked. After you defeat the enemy, continue your quest.
I usually only rush to help less developed settlements, where happiness hit from a lost attack could get critical. Otherwise I just let them defend themselves. If they loose, then I make sure to prioritize the settlements for a while and rush to it's defense, so that happiness climbs back up.
There is no need for you to be there for every single attack. Stable settlement can loose a battle and recover fast. Just go there to fix the settlement and make sure that they do not loose another attack, before they have fully recovered.
This is correct. I am in Nuka World right now. Longfellow cabin in Far Harbor was attacked at least a game month ago. They lost and some crops/water were damaged. There are 8 settlers including Longfellow and now only 6 water and 5 crops. They do not have a supply line. I have no idea why but the happiness is solid at 80. That seems wrong. The happiness should be decreasing. I should have made some extra water and crops so that they will still have enough if some is damaged in an attack. But that increases the chance of an attack a little.
