Fallout 4 mods on bethesda.net
Is there any way that I could catch a virus from a mod from bethesda.net?

Erm.. no.
Those mods are generally moderated, and you're basically getting the same thing as nexusmods, except they have a restriction system that doesn't allow most if not all:
  • Copyrighted Material
  • Nudity

I'm told both nexus and Bethesda use a scanner to check for malicious payloads. Of course that is not a 100% solution so you could potentially pick up an infection using mods from bethesda.net or nexus. Risk vs reward ;-)

Of course not any modder that gives you a virus is an idiot, top modders just create undetectable backdoors into peoples systems.

Yes. And no.

You can 'catch a virus' from any contact with another device - computer, phone, USB drive, anything that connects to your computer can transfer a malicious program.

But the likelyhood of your doing so using Bethesda.Net or any of the major third party repositories is pretty close to nil.

So, no matter what - you should have your own malware solution and *BE USING IT*. Scan the files you download yourself, *pay* that subscription (but not to Norton of MacAfee - they're both ♥♥♥♥♥, Superantispyware and Malwarebytes) have 'real-time protection' turned on and scan your computer for malware and PUP at least once a week.

You wouldn't hug your mother if you thought she had ebola, so don't connect to strange computers without protection.

dont know how well they curate their mods, but considering how awful they curate these forum via bethesda employees. i would be cautious . also i wouldnt touch any mods from there, because none of them will be compatible with the legitimate mod scene in the future.

Those illegitimate modders on bethesda.net cant inherit property.

Can mods run executable code? If no, malware risks should be low to nonexistent.

You don't need run an exe to get a virus, a dll is just as executable as an exe; all you need to do is run your game.

But like i said before they aren't going to give you any red flags that let you know that you've been had.

I do understand a .dll is the same as a .exe in terms of malware potential, but do Bethesda dot net mods have any such code, or is it all data and scripting language?

I haven't downloaded from Bethsoft, but i'd imagine they don't block dll's alot of people feel they're harmless. But with that said they use Python code in scripts, those can be made to be malicious.
