Weapon Mod Advice (Short Ported vrs. Long Ported)
Picked up my first legendary on my new Survival run, a Explosive Pipe Pistol from Station Olivia. I want to mod it as a close to mid-range automatic due to this legendary effect, so I'm going with Hardened Automatic Receiver, Glow Sights (hate pipe weapon reflex sights), large drum, and marksman stock (until I get Gun Nut 2).

My question, should I go for long or short ported barrel? I probably won't use VATS much with this weapon as I find automatics like this perform better outside VATS.

Anyone know the real diff. between these options?

well long barrel is obviously made for range as such it increases your range and reduces hip fire accuracy which it says.
the short ported well its just for short to mid range no hip fire penalty but shot barrels, stocks and so on reduce the AP cost for vats if you choose to use it

I don't think an explosive weapon is a wise choice for close range. However, I noticed that range is really important and you want at least 150, else the damage will drop off very fast. And if you don't use vats much, there is really no reason for a short barrel.

Ah, better hip fire with short barrel... that makes sense.... I think I'll test both. Thanks!

I haven't found the "explosive" damage to be that large of an area of effect.... Like if they get that close I usually bash and back away before firing again....

really depends, but if you are thinking about picking explosive perks, keep in mind they also increase AoE of explosive lengedary weapons.

Good point but those perks weren't really in this build until lv 40+ at which point this weapon will be long retired. This is basically my "clear Corvega" and deal with the ghouls at the train station early game weapon

the weapons damage doesnt matter the slightest as long as you got explosive on it with demo expert and if your using commando that thing will be useable all through out the game only getting replace by somethign like a explosive combat shotgun or minigun

if you went the pistol route, use the short version. you will have the same range as a long barrel almost with pistol perks

I should have mentioned I never take the damage boosting perks, especially in Survival as I really think they are wasted perks

I went with long ported btw, no regrets.
