Edit: Oh and the synth version is the worst of the ''human'' companions. Her AI still has the mr.handy behavior so she'll just start fighting with her fists when enemies come up close to her/it.
A few tips, if you haven't already go to the school in Diamond City and answer correctly to the miss Nanny then say to the teacher that "love is powerful blablabla". 1 like + 1 love I think, easy. The rest is indeed more complicated, what you can do is simply travel with her, the more time you spend, the more she likes you. Even if you don't see any notification.
One option is just to console command the perk in.
Here is a link to her fallout wiki page. Look under range of interest to find what she likes/dislikes, etc...

I usually just use a robot companion I build myself WHEN I use companions, but like some of you guys have said, they tend to get in the way. Being a super stealth based character tends to mean I can't use companions as they will also give away my position.
Also keep in mind until you get Curie a new body your affinity is capped. The same applies to Nick, Macready, Danse, and Cait, you need to do their sidequest in order to unlock higher levels of affinity.
Also, she's a terrible magpie. She will randomly pick up enemy's weapons during combat, and then use them. So you can equip her with an ultra-powerful plasma sniper rifle, then find her using a pipe pistol. You have to strip out her inventory of weapons every so often.
Make sure she has the right armour, and the right weapons, and she can be pretty devastating.
In terms of base damage, she isn't in the top 3.
Characters with highest special stats by order : X6-88 > Strong > Piper > rest of companions.
It's a single player RPG, not an MMO. It's not necessarily about achieving maximum DPS - it's about how you want to play the game. And on that basis, Curie is not the liability some people seem to think - you just need to understand how her character works. Yes, partnering with psychopathic killers will improve your combat. But perhaps it's not the way to build a new world.
Strong was easy. Just do Minutemen quests and select the violent responses when in dialogue with an NPC.
