Ah, well thanks for that bit of history, I've learned something new today, and YEA, I imagine the original item would've been far too heavy to carry.
As far as why Bethesda used it?
The model was either....
1. Free
2. Cheap
I'm sure they made the model themselves. It was just a weird design choice. It actually wouldn't have been a bad thing if they had called it a Machine Gun instead. Could have had some cool mods on it, too. Granted the Maxim was more than a bit outdated by the 50's but it deserves acknowledgement. It slaughtered thousands upon thousands of people.
Fallout 1/2/NV you'd see a lot of real world fire arms among some scifi stuff. Fallout 3 kind of kept some of that, but they literally threw that idea out the window on Fallout 4, everything but the .44 pistol and deliver personally fantasy fire arms. Hunting Rifle is okay... but personally left handed bolt action really ruins it for me.
The AR is literally a Maxim, so you can include that too. Also, as I learned recently there was a real life counterpart to the Fat Man as well.
Slight edit, 10mm pistols are also a thing. They are rare, as they were eclisped in popularity by the .45 S&W. But 10mm pistols do exist, and they are fairly badass rounds. Can pack more punch than a .357 Magnum.
Personally the AR looks more like a Lewis Gun minus the magazine. Still a fantasy fire arm. 10mm Pistol is a still a fantasy fire arm, and I'm talking about looks, and function. I would even say the Combat Rifle is a Fantasy fire arm, darn thing is like half welded together.
When I mean fantasy I mean looks and function of the weapon. Most of the modded into the game fire arms on nexus personally blow the stuff the game actually has out of the water. Definitely the IF-54 which is pretty much a combat rifle replacer if you want it to. hehe
Or you could just get a mod to change it. Personally I think whining is more fun, but that's just me.
Yeees... Fill a niiice meeeaty doughtnut with... *Slurp* Mouthwatering amounts of delicious hot lead. *Mmm*
While they do look ridiculous, a firearm'a function is only barely defined by the outside. As long as the barrel and receiver are properly aligned, the only thing that matters are the internal components.
Guns are not swords. They don't have to adhere to precise design specifications that dictate how it looks in order to be able to function. There are plenty of real life guns that don't look fabulous that work.
The pipe weapons in this game would likely blow up in your face however.
yeah WAY too many pipe weapons!
and you are right, the pressure a bullet generates is enormous, that's why gun barrels are precision made from expensive/difficult to manufacture steel alloys
and by "difficult" and "expensive" I mean for much of Humanity's history/ability and the resources of the Wasteland, as comparison, it's NOT something you can do easily, not at all.
Many people in real life have been maimed or killed by "hand made" guns blowing up in their own hands.
The pressures/speed of a bullet is just short of a true "explosion", there really is High and Low Explosives and the powders used in bullets are "Low explosives"
Gunpowder was still being used as the explosive charge in many artillery shells during the start of World War 1, bullets use cordite though which is even more powerful as well as being "smokeless".
