Nexus vs In-game
Any recommendations? I'm new to modding and don't want to get so lost in all the technical stuff. I don't want to create mods... Just use mods that already exist.

    Strengths:
  1. If you're a console user, then obviously you'll be forced to use it, unless you jailbreak your console, and extract the mods from there.
  2. It's in-game, you can set your load order in-game, and can download your mods in-game without having to download an external program, and do it from there
  3. No forced updates as compared to the steam workshop

    Weaknesses
  4. With the way the interface is, there's:
  • No Search function
  • The interface is horribly put together, marketed for console,s but should be changed for PC regardless.
  • There's no way to tell when your mods will complete without finding the mod page again, it needs a download manager to see the progress on all your downloads

NexusMods

Strengths:
  1. It allows for larger downloads
  2. The censorship on there is almost non-existant, aside from uploading mods with no permission from the original copyright holder
  3. It actually has a search function
  4. Comes with its own mod manager, that installs mods virtually, and uninstalls then virtually, so you're able to install your mods without downloading them again
  5. Their mod pages have support forums, a bugs forum, and even a way to give back to the mod authors with the donation button, if they enable it
  6. There's a hotpage for finding out which mods are popular, so you're able to get your hands on them
  7. There's actual categories that make sense, and makes it easier to find mods you want or need
  8. There's no forced updates with these mods, so you're able to grab an older version, or update whenever you want to
  9. Nexusmods also supports multiple bethesda games, so you can use it for not only fallout 4, but for fallout 3 / new vegas/ 2 / 1 / tactics, and even other games too!

Weaknesses:
It doesn't really have that any, unless you count being forced to login to download mods a weakness, but both mod sites force you to do this.

I recommend nexusmods

Id wait a couple months for all the recent dust to settle and see if nexus still even works with FO4, if so I'd stick with them.

I use both actually. Bethesda.net for easy easy install and it's just nice to install mods while ingame. But I also check Nexus for mods. Thankfully we don't have to decide and can just use both. Nexus has more mods though of course, but Bethesda's mod service is still new, so we will see.

Wow great thanks! So should I be safe to just delete my current in-game mods or should I create a new game using nexus? I'd like to keep my current profess if possible, but no biggie otherwise.

You can use mods you've downloaded from bethesda.net with the nexus mod manager, I wouldn't use both and It's probably not the best idea.

It's up to you with what you want to use.

Which tool do you use for managing mods? NMM? I'm guessing it's pretty user friendly.
shalekendar Apr 29, 2016 @ 7:05pm
I'm using both. There are a couple from the mod menu that I can't find on Nexus (like 5) and the rest from the Nexus Mod Manager. The trick seems to be that once you've set your mod menu mods, load a game, wait for it to tell you you're missing some .esm files, then exit the game completely. Once at the desktop, restart NMM, click the plugins tab and reslect all the .esm files that Bethesda was kind enough to deselect for you. Then just launch from NMM.

Seems like Nexus is the better choice at this time. But B.net needs a search engine. Also size of the .net database needs to greatly increase. Just saying. As long a Nexus FMM still works then Nexus is the one.

You're going to want the Nexus anyway in order to use mods with Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim, Oblivion, and Morrowind (and some other games without so many mods)

Of course you could use Steam Workshop but that's such a badly designed system and doesn't work with the older games.

Great Question, With some minor tweaking the In Game modding could be much better then Nexus. But until then Nexus takes the lead and its pretty much the only place to get mods lol.
