I did the same but after leaving and returning a while later he was dead.

Deezer, and the cat, aren't counted as settlers to the Covenant location, and aren't allied with the Covenant peoples themselves, so they'll stay alive as long as no one kills them, and aren't assign-able at all to anything.

I don't mind Deezer myself because hey... To me, the new settlers has an infinity supply of free lemonade.
