Laser weapons need a suppressor mod.
Seriously it should not be hard to make an in lore suppressor for laser weapons, all it would have to do is make the beam invisible to the eye and remove the sound, best way to explain that make it something like "infrared filter" cause right now being an energy weapons based stealth character is impossible.

It's not impossible, just difficult. If you are far enough away from, they won't be able to locate you.

nexus has about 3 go there i have one installed but haven't got my hands on a laser weapon yet, id suggest you use silenced energy weapons which automatically makes all energy weapons silenced. There's also mods that add weapon silences for them.

Just for the record, the sound you hear when you fire Laser Weapons is the superheated air around the beam. It's the same effect as the crack of thunder during a lightning storm. You can't silence it without universal Earmuffs.

On the laser weapons it is more the beam you want to remove not the sound, also different types of energy.

The laster weapons in fallout are more or less just really high powered laser pointers, they are not going to burn air molicules like lightning, the only exception is the laser musket which works differently. Anyway the main thing that give you away in fallout is that bright red beam more then anything.

On another note, no clue where you learned phycis but a laser and lightning are 100% different, lightning is a discharge from postivie to negative, it is quite litterly a jump of thousands upon thousands of volts of energy. A laser is a constistant beam of light, most laser weapons in real life do not make noise they just generate light a long a beam, which equals a lot of heat in a small location, but not enough to burn the air, if it did that firing a laser would be like depresserizing a plane every damn time you pull the trigger.

An interesting watch on this topic. Personally I believe that that much energy traveling thru an atmosphere would make one hell of a crack. All the molecular bonds in the air between you and the target (water vapor, carbon dioxide, etc) would be ripped apart. Just my theory as I have no actual way of testing it in real life, nor does anyone else. Such powerful weapons have yet to be invented.

Infra red well that is what you are seeing in Fo4 now High intensity focused red light [carries the most heat per jule

Ultra violet laser only certain insects can see that spectrum , but has a lower heat/jule ratio. less visable/less damage.

Black light laser: the beam itself would be invisable to the eye but it would illuminat certain colors near it's path [white-yellow-etc]. It also has the lowest hear/jule ration [IE less damage of all].

If there were DLC [or mods] that reflect that then I am for it.

the Ash Pile /Guify affects are science fantacy. There would just be a carterized hole in the victim. and a prolonged or Massive beam to penetrate PA.

We're trying argue physics here, in a world where after 200 years, newspapers, and couches, and other such things havent decayed, despite being left out in the elements for most of that time. There was couch left in the woods near my house years ago, it took 15 years tops for that thing to be reduced from a near pristine couch to nothing but a metal frame.

But back on topic. Whether or not the laser being produced is generating enough heat in a quick enough time to explode the air around, like lightning does, we dont know.(side note:Tesle rifle uses fusion cells? it should be using plasma rounds, as lightning is a type of plasma.) However what we do know is that the laser rifles use fusion cells. Now we dont exactly know how those work, but one can theorize that perhaps when fusion cell is used, it has a similar function to how a bullet works. Its likely that when the trigger is pulled , it in some way causes a small fusion reaction in the cell, which is what creates the energy needed for the laser. Thus what we hear is not the laser, but the sound of that fusion reaction.

Supressors would be pointless, because a bright red beam is generally a big "OVER HERE" sign.

I would say that the laser weapons are actually a different type of plasma weapon, as it really doesn't fire off a laser. The shot from the laser rifle is far to slow to be just a concentrated beam of light. The flight time between shooter and target should be just shy of instantaneous, far faster then the human eye could detect. Also if you look at the beam itself it is far from concentrated, and upon impact with the target there is an effect upon collision where the plasma balloons outward. Again not the physics of a 'Laser'. Why is it called a laser rifle? Who the hell knows. All I know is that it does not act like a laser.

Also I do understand we are talking about fantasy physics here. I mean there is a shoulder fired nuke in this game that is easily survivable at 50 ft away. None of it makes sense. I just find enjoyment in trying to throw in a little reason into that which is completely irrational.

1) As folk note, the extreme amount of energy firing through the air WOULD ionize every damn thing in the path.
so you would *see* and hear it.
as I posted on other thread the real life 1 megawatt US navy laser...you never see actually firing only the result on distant target
bet t makes a hell of a crack and flash near firing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2) lasers are actually pretty ineffecient weapons against objects on Earth, for a bunch of reasons
Kinetic and epxlosive weapons are much more efficient, at least with *our* tech.
boring a hole thorugh things realy does NOT do a lot of damage unless it hits vital components, pressured gas tanks etc
against a PERSON however...well they could have quite catastrophic effects because of hydraulic shock caused by a steam or plasma burst on impact, might blow a small chunk out of you by those effetcs as flesh is quite different than metal,
but the shock to the nervous system would be catastrophic
same as a hit by a powerful fast large claibre or hyperosnic bullet, like a .50 BMG can kill you with even a flesh would if you are unlucky enough as your nervous system can sort of overload
Anyone who's been burned by red or white hto metal may also know what I'm talking about (sucks really really sucks, as does getting a laser pointer in the eye, instant bloody 3 day migraine)
super heating flesh causes the WATER in to flash to steam = like small bomb going off or an impact for a very powerful blow.
Was arc weldign forgot my gauntlet, grabbed the pipe, turned it...O M F G
felt like i'd been hit full force by 2handed swing with a cricket bat due to the steam expansion through flesh :(
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3) Long time ago I proposed a REAl "phaser"
a pulsed phasing laser
pulsed "packets" of laser energy would act like a a sort of hammer drill on a target, smashing itno the object and setting up shockwaves

You'd have a sensor that would note the spectrum of elements of the target impact
this would then change the laser colours in real time to be most efficient through the *on going* process even though it may be a fraction of a second

the combination of the effect would be that a shockwave of plasma would hammer and expand out formt he impact point and THAT woudl do a lot more damage than the laser beam itself
basically an expanding micro bomb that would shatter the target
can't be done, as yet.
~
4) The lasers in Fallout have a HUGE advtantage and making them silent as well would be unfair
they are basiclaly recoilless!
I use a Two shot laser in combat but nto for sniping, the difference in "recoil" versus Overseer's Guardian is night nad day
I can guarantee just using a reflex sight to really hammer enemies at range very easily
try that with a 2 shot kinetic weapon and the recoil knocks your aim to hell and you have to compensate for it all the time
~~~~~
5) hey it's a game, so the lasers could fire ICBMs, rainbow unicorns or Frostwalkers :P
plasma weapons would be devastating!
had an idea about using a rotating toroidal magnet as central core projectile ot keep coherence....hm....
anyway, you would do extreme damage with those if ever practical
as noted lasers as we have are really NOT very effective at damaging items
during the 1980s SDO "Star wars" crap, one company had a demonstration video showing their laser "blowing up" a rocket on a test bed!
they'd cheated, they'd used jacks and pyrotehcnics to blow and crush it!
sure if it penetrated a sull tank of rocket propellant that would potentially be catastrophic, but against a tank for example? damn near usleess unless it struck a vital object such as a weapon sight or radio, or you coudl make a "Phaser" or a laser with a beam 1' or more across
but a plasma weapon...
I recall years ago, was a UK university making the first industrial "plasma cutter" experiments
experimental nozzle weas huge like nearly 2 feet across and they put a 3' square steel plate in front of it, steel was couple of inches thick
just blew a 2 foot hole right through that damn steel plate in a few seconds, JEBUZ!!
anyone who's ever worked with steel will get hy that was such a big deal and a shock (back then)
as noted with my phaser idea above
plasma impacts would likely cause severe damage by fracturing and possibly even explosion as the material super heats, gasses and secondary plasma rip through the material
but, keeping the plasma coherent as it goes through the air....that we can't do as yet.
