Making a clean save?
In Skyrim, it was heavily recommended to make a clean save, by making a save right after Helgen in vanilla state. Would it be a good idea to do the same for Fallout? I've made a male and female clean save right before leaving the vault - would that point be reasonable?

Yea pretty much, since you can still edit the character when leaving it you can start all kind of builds etc without doing the boring begining all the time.
As long as you dont play with mods that edit the start or character creation you are fine i guess :P Did the same for games like skyrim too.

But in the end if you dont like a build or want to change perks you can still use console-commands, of course that only works if you actualy want to use commands or start a new character just because you wanna switch the kind of weapons you use.

stock saves are always a good thing.
from there, you make copies and customise each one however you want.

its a good idea to keep an eye out for memorable moments iin the game that you want to replay. such as crucial points in the game/storyline, or stock saves of profiles just before you branch off and do something else ect.

use a combo of hard saves and custom saves.
make regular zips too.

(not to mention that if you do start modding, you may or may not lose the ability to start a new game.. so stock files are as close as it gets to new starts).
(it dosent happen for everyone, but its a lot less hassel to launch a stock file instead of disabling all your mods, verifying and trying to launch a new game).

This is good advice. You could do like I did. I made a save BEFORE choosing who to build the signal interceptor with, because building it enters the third and final act of the story and sorta binds you to the faction you choose to help you. Then after I finished one faction, iI backtracked to that save and built it or someone else to explore the other endings wihtout having to replay the entire game.

However for survival difficulty you are going to have to make a hard copy save in your computer. This is because survival saves are wonky and mostly only keeps track of the last three saves which makes backtrackign a bit difficult.
