Do you think respec mods are cheating?
Sniping sucks early game on survival and I am tempted respec a little and put some points into explosives and endurance. The only bad thing about it is I used the idiot sevant mod which randomly gives exp. I am currently level 15.

But what about someone that puts 10 hours into the game only to discover that they should have put more points in one attribute than another?

Been there done that (More than 10 hours).

Started over..............

It's about as cheating as any other mod. I mean technically yea but it doesn't really matter as long as you are having fun. though personally I just make a new character out of preference to respec mods.

That's a fine statement. But it's not an answer to my question.

it's a single player game so you do whatever you want..

Everything is "cheating", even the normal perks. Or using chems. Or legendary weapons. Perks or chems allow you to do things that aren't "normal", like being able to breathe underwater. If that hadn't existed in the game and someone made a mod for it, people would say it is cheating. So, mods let you play the way you want. It is up to you to decide when you feel that using a mod makes you feel guilty, like cheating yourself.

Some people are very severe with themselves and feel guilty if they add anything, absolutely anything, to the game. Worse, many of these are also severe with everyone else and like to impose their gospel on anyone who wants to play differently. Then if someone posts about using such or such a mod, or not liking Survival, or whatever, they stomp on him- "you are cheating", "you are a wimp", "you suck", "playing unmodded vanilla Survival is the only holy scripture"...

Games usually are based on two things: challenge set by game developers and abilities given by game developers to solve the challenges.

These boundaries make the gameplay, things outside of these (such as editing scripts) are not part of the game: if that counts as cheating or not depends on various things but it is no longer playing the game but circumventing the game.

Let's take another example: in chess you have specific rules on how pieces can move. If you decide to move in another way that is no longer chess or it is cheating.

It does not matter if it is single-player, multi-player, tournament or just for fun: stepping outside the boundaries is no longer about what the game is about, overcoming challenges with possibilities given to you.

Ask yourself if you are ok with that.

In single-player, you are only playing "against" yourself so you must judge yourself if that is allowed, if it is still fun to do that and so on.

In multiplayer everyone would have to follow same set of rules to keep it fair but that is another discussion entirely.

Imagine someone is playing chess solitaire. It is extremely boring, but some people do it. Imagine that the person makes some changes to the rules of chess, perhaps to accomodate the solitaire play, or for whatever reason. Is it cheating? And who cares?

It's a single player game, Do whatever the bleep you want. It's about what makes the game fun for you. I like having to work towards a good sniper rifle. If you don't, then whatever, do whatever you want. It doesn't (or it shouldn't) matter to anyone else because what you do in your own single player game has no impact on how anyone else plays or enjoys the game.
