Vault-tec DLC: Vanilla can build underground vaults (with one hitch)
I'll let the photos tell the story first, before I expand upon it...

I'm playing vanilla with all DLC. Yes, this was done with no mods, and the only console command was to turn off clipping to get below the ground layer.

Once you're down there, you can build as you normally would.... this is all under Kingsport Lighthouse. You can set items to 'break' ground layer, but you can't force them down from above so bear that in mind when making a 'marker'.

You will need to tcl to get down, but once below ground you can turn the clipping back on and won't need it to 'exit', as climbing through the ground layer from below will only hang you up a moment and then you'll pop through.

So... with all this functional in a vanilla game, all we need is a way to penetrate the ground layer without using console commands, and VIOLA! You have your underground vaults, at any settlement you want (that has adequate room beneath).

Retitled and bumped, this is too good to let die.

I'll wait for the mod community to make large open cave caverns at settlements, I just made a request at nexusmods forum mod request forum for large open cave caverns!..

I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't some combination of items or slight tweak with a console command, that would allow this without a mod, by making a 'hole' in the ground that doesn't require tcl to get through.

That's literally all I needed to do this... turned clip off, went underground, built a starter pad and a stairwell back up through the ground, turned clipping back on and built a test vault like nothing was different. Walked back up the stairs and hey, I'm above ground.

Can you go back down the same way?

You'll have to use the console tcl command, or wait for some means (mod or console) to make a hole in the ground. Or, find a static object in a buildable area, that leaves a 'hole in the ground', and can be manually deleted . I haven't found one yet, but I've also been working on other things and haven't given it much time.

Maybe one could use the travelpoint doormat placed incide the vault to avoid the TLC command. You can't go INSIDE but you can go out.

I think this does work, I remember dropping one 'downstairs' but I don't remember testing it. Prett sure I did though... this is the problem with doing all this 'research' is that some things take seconds to test, and other FO4 tasks run in to hours, and I tend to lose the small stuff :)
