None, companions make survival harder. They set off traps and draw fire towards you while you are in stealth. Imagine you are in stealth still hidden and an enemy with a rocket launcher/fat man/grenades/suicider sees your companion next to you, you die from the AoE. It happens alot more then you'd think.
Lone wanderer perk is the strongest player buff in the game and it requires no companion.
Dog meat is usable with Lone wanderer, however his hp are too low, he can't wear armor, his stealth sucks drawing fire just like everyone else, sets off traps, blocks doorways getting you killed (dogmeat is the worst for this), also he has near no weight carry like 50lbs in survival.
Oh and the companions need to be stim packed every time they get hurt because they don't get back up without it. Just wastes stim pack right? It gets worse, they fall off of buildings and high places all the time. Without fast travel backtracking to stim pack them might take 20 minutes just to have them fall off again at another point.
Out of the 3, Curie is THE BEST robot companion if you force her to stay a robot after her companion quest as she gets 500 more hp than all other robot companions with the same carry weight and damage.
Meanwhile Ada encourages you to carry things and is good til you get access to all sentry parts and assaultron legs and is still the best if you don't wanna glitch Curie/console command her and Codsworth is at max affinity.
If you wanna use the fatman launchers with the sentry body, make sure you get inspriational 1 so your companions can't hurt you.
As for making the best robots. ALL PARTS BESIDES LEG ARE SENTRY PARTS! (Exception: You can use a Robobrain head or Assaultron Laser head if you want) Use Sentry parts everywhere else for the most stats besides the legs which must be assaultron for the best movement speed/carryweight/mobility. Sentry bot legs give 150 more carry weight, but make it os your companion can't go through doors. Give them two Explosive Miniguns and 2 fatman launchers (With inspriational 1) and watch them melt the world.
Alterntivally you can give them two melee weapons like silent blades or whatever, anything with blacksmith 3.
I can't recomend going for the OP Explosive minigun/nuke builds though. Unless you really hate Fallout 4's combat and just want it to auto-resolve in your favor with minimal/no input.
Which companion you use is very dependent on how you play. If you're a stealth character, Deacon seems to be the only one that won't blow your cover every step. If you want a "Tank" Character, Strong, and oddly, Hancock are the most aggressive, either equipped with a melee weapon will draw all fire off you allowing you to flank or get some decent headshots.
The key to making companions useful is actually ordering them to attack. Once you get in the habit of doing this, companions go from burden to boon particularly in the middle game when the difficulty curve jumps, but before you can compensate for it with OP gear. I can't count the times I've had Strong or Hancock eat an Assaultron laser for me. Fun fact: If you enter "ADS" behind a companion, the game treats them as "Cover" and you will lean out lol.
Why you no explosive shielding on your gear? rockets and explosions becomes a no issue :)
And download a mod to enable console commands so you can port companions to you in survival mode when they fall off buildings or if you lose them.
If you give them good armor and ballistic weave with the companion perk you well not need to stem pack them often
Get the perk that take out friendly damage from your companion so she doesnt kill you.
Watch out for the fatman and the explosive shell as it can give you murders count if she hit a friendly npc.
Take em out and equip her with only 2 hammer saw if it's an issue for you. She will destroy everything on sight.
The key is to know how to give order properly to your companion.
Every raider, gunner or other human enemy has a stimpack
