Sometimes I wish there was an alternative as it can be way too brutal, but at least I can't steam roll save through the game (because there are crap tones of times that I would if I could).
That said, there are certainly many people who seem to like the Survival Mode in it's current form. There are also several user-made mods that can re-introduce various types of saving mechanics into Survival Mode.
Personally, I've been using a mod called "Hardcore Mode [ON]", which essentially introduces all of the survival simulation elements into my game, while removing other aspects of Bethesda's Survival Mode that I find to be unenjoyable.
If they add an Iron man to survival mode that would be cool. I would try it, but it would be tough.
