Fences on settlements. Is it worth the trouble?
It doesnt increase "defence" value, and the numbnuts settlers allways leave the gates opened!
So, besides cosmetic reasons, is there a valid purpuse to spending the huge ammount of time it takes to build a full "wall" arround a settlement?

NPC's can just "teleport" through fences if they get stuck, but what you want to do to alleviate that problem is:

Build a half wall around your settlement
Build turrets on the other side
???
Profit

Unless you're at said settlement, defences, walls, ect. doesn't matter. Even then, some settlements have enemy spawns inside.

I figure out where enemies spawn and put concrete walls between their spawn points and my crops/purifiers.

Depending on where you build walls, attackers could spawn inside...

I think so. If all else fails, build them around valuable resources like power and water, then heavily fortify spawn points (including the inside settlement one).

Depends on what kind of feel you want to give to your settlements, imo some feel more natural with walls around them, some with junk fences and some with no perimeter walls or fences also depending on what type of settlement you build.

I do it for crops. Many settlements offer 'natural' fencing anyway.

No point defence-wise to have them. Even if you walled the entire area off enemies will just teleport inside. It is part of the dev's shortcut on pathfiding.

Fences are useless, since attackers spawn inside the settlement. Just cover the settlement with turrets. Fences and walls are just there because it might look good.

I completely fenced Sanctuary and placed turrets every few meters. I have never had any enemies spawn inside nor have I had enemies break through the fences. I stationed 3 guard posts near the bridge plus had a gate leading to vault 111 but I placed 5 turrets just inside. The gate is always opened with a few dead raiders lying round to loot.

do like the smiley man.
make your perimeter "live".
(use a wall of cages with the openings facing in, and out).
= profit,, and mayhem.

That's because Sanctuary isn't one of the settlements that has an enemy spawn point inside the settlement.

Egret Tours Marina, Somerville Place, Oberland Station, Taffington Boathouse, Nordhagen Beach, and Finch Farm all have spawns well inside the settlement borders, so walls are purely cosmetic there.

Greentop Nursery and County Crossing have spawn points just past the border, so depending on how close to the border you build they could spawn inside or outside the wall.

Sanctuary has at least one spawn point in the settlement. It is behind the house with the workshop (where you originally find the already planted melon and gourd).

I think everyone has their own "take" on wall building. I build two rings of turrets and no walls; first ring is the front lines, on the ground, and usually slightly damaged by melee stuff. Second ring is on the cheapest floating wooden platforms I can build, and I delete the staircase to them after they are installed. The higher ring has a better line of sight if your settlement is on a hill and helps to concentrate fire rather than have the turrets kill each other by trying to shoot through their neighboring turrets. In settlements, in any difficulty mode other than survival, I put the fast travel mat on the roof of a building, so that I start a defense with a good vantage point right away, and don't necessary need to be wearing a jet pack to get up there.

I do build "privacy" walls around sleeping areas, but they are not meant for defense, they are meant for pathing and asthetics.

Oh, interesting, I didn't realize it also had one.

Like @Nayroy said, unless you are present barriers are meaningless. I built a wall around my generator that runs the water purifiers at Sanctuary. I got the message Defend Sanctuary but before I could get there (Survival mode) I got the "failled" message. So, I went anyway to check on the damage and the only thing that needed repair was the generator.

This makes sense as the game just rolls the dice and computes damage starting with generators then turrets and finally structures (although I've never seen structures damaged yet.)
