Is Nick Valentine Important
Been looking around a lot of forums and people said that you can't complete Far Harbor without finding a guy named Nick Valentine. Heard he is in a diamond city but I refuse to go there until I am a higher level. I'm getting close to finishing the Far Harbor main quest... Will I have to leave and come back later? BTW I'm level 79.

You can complete Far Harbor without Nick Diamond. I didn't take him with me when I went.

Why would you refuse to go there at level 79? I went there at 20 something and I was fine

You just need him to talk to a robot and open a door somewhere. It's not really relevant to the main story but might give you more info on things. I never got around to doing it on my first save and finished all the main missions there.

You don't need Nick for far harbour, however taking him along with you, because he's a synth, adds some Interesting things.

I opened the door myself by lockpicking it. Can't remember how I got the robot to talk but it/he did. No problem.

With most games I will avoid the main story line at all costs until there is literally nothing left to complete then I get to destroy the main quest line. As soon as the game told me to head to Diamond City I made it my goal to avoid that place at all costs. I've pretty much cleared the entire commonwealth at this point on survival mode and still haven't entered the city. The closest I got was meeting some reporter girl at the gates and helping her inside.

you gotta meet him to get Far Harbor but you don't need him in Far Harbor.

Nick is one of the best companions in the game

I didn't meet him yet. I had a brotherhood quest that told me to clear out audrian day spa at far harbor. that's how I found the boat that took me there. Never even meet valentine

You actually don't have to apparently, I used to keep spreading that you need to do any quests at all, but I made it there on a new character, didn't do Out of Time or any other quests and I was able to go to Far Harbor

having nick just shows more story rich dialogue and story to the dlc

but you can do it without him

Nick is optional, but Nick is one of the best personalities of the game and having him with you during far harbor doubles the flavor/fun/humor/etc of the dlc.

Playing on Survival mode, I found having the Lone Wanderer Perk made the game a lot more manageable. So I don't usually have a companion unless forced.

You can go to Diamond City, there's a lot of side quests there, interesting people, a player home, several interesting stores, you can change your face and hairstyle there, you can gain a new companion, Piper (the best IMO but of course this is a matter of very personal taste) and you can do all that without advancing the main quest any, if you don't want to. You can also advance it very slowly, bit by bit and leave it on hold for as long as you want while you do other things. Doing so will give you another companion, Nick, who is moderately interesting to take to Far Harbor. In fact I think your policy makes the main quest pretty stale if you leave it until you're level 100+ and have explored every last nook of the map. You will have explored a lot if not all of the locations involved in the MQ by then, and revisitng them will feel anticlimactic.
