The detective build, remastered.
Detective Build Remastered
So I noticed the Fudgemuppet Detective build that was similar to the one I’ve been running and it motivated me to write up a backstory/stats and share it. Warning, if you hate TL:DR then don’t bother this one’s a biggun, it even includes different endings so you can choose your faction.

enjoy.

This SS was born in Boston and raised by loving parents, his father a police detective who used to work with Nick Valentine from the Pre-war Era. He grows up always wanting to be like his father, and being an intelligent high achiever in his studies while keeping in shape looks to have him on track. His Father insists on taking advantage of this by getting the education he never had the opportunity to receive, so he is sent away to College over on the west coast. Here, he meets his future wife and enters a serious relationship. Upon graduating he decides to stay on the west coast with his partner but continue with his dream, joining the police where he is trained in the use of side arms, and is eventually promoted to the rank of detective.

While his commitment has kept the couple from beginning a family, it has also kept him from communicating with his parents, and as he answers the call to arms by joining the military just like his father had, finds out the very man he’d looked up to his whole life had passed away that week. Having not visited him since leaving for college this event deeply shocks and hurts the SS, and is close to the only thing he can think about during his 3-year stint in the army, seeing action in anchorage and learning how to use automatic weaponry. His trauma is worsened in learning his Mother passes similarly just 3 months before his discharge.

These tragedies see a changed man return from war, determined to prioritize family over his work. As such on his return he persuades his similarly career driven wife to embrace this perspective and move back to Boston so he can do his parents proud, amending the neglect of what he’s decided is truly important. He even goes as far as to start a transfer to Boston’s police department, and might have even met pre-war nick if the bombs hadn’t begun to fall.
And we all know what happens next.

The SS is mortified by the death of his wife and the abduction of his son. As he leaves the vault he wants two things more than anything, his son found and his wife avenged. Up until Kellogg is dead and Shawn is found he will be impatient toward anything that isn’t directly related to finding his son, so he’ll proceed with the main quests quickly. Only upon finding Nick Valentine is the SS reminded of the career he used to believe was so important and what it stands for. While that alone doesn’t convince him he’s sure the skills he gained in being a detective would help him find Shawn, so he dons the battered trench coat and gets familiar with Nick. In doing so he also comes to rely upon his weapon of choice, a slim barreled .44 to keep him out of harm’s way.

He investigates the major factions for the game and helps them in any way he can, hoping to garner information as well as in-debt them to him so they might assist him finding his son. Firstly, he helps the railroad, who in return upgrade his coat with ballistic weave. This is followed by the B.O.S, who retrain him into deployment ready combat condition, as well as assist in building the Relay into the institute using their advanced technological expertise and access to resources.
Upon entering the institute, the SS is heartbroken to find that bad fortune has robbed him yet again of what he holds dearest. Determined to make up for the lifetime he’s lost with his son, he investigates the institute and completes quests associated with it.

DEPENDING ON YOUR VIEWS THE RATIONALIZATIONS FOR EACH FACTION ENDING ARE AS FOLLOWS: (skip to the one you want)
Institute Ending: More than anything else, the detective believes family to be important, and as such supports his son the only way he can in his dying days. He eventually taking over the institute to preserve his offspring’s legacy, the same way he moved to Boston to honor his parents. Although the B.O.S and railroad meet their ends, he only cares about keeping his family united, he’ll do anything for Shawn, the only part of his old life that remains. After the campaign the SS will find the institute seems to run itself. So he decides to keep busy transforming settlements into law abiding outposts and prisons, whilst doing detective work on the side (which justifies the many side quests and Far Harbor DLC).

Minutemen ending: Reuniting with his long lost son quickly grows stale in the face of all the lies and deceit the Detective finds within the institute, much of which is apparently orchestrated by his own son. Seeing as the SS enters the institute with help from the brotherhood the mission ‘from within’ is available and when completed is the best demonstration of this. The SS decides the director of the institute is not the son he intended to raise, and accepts that innocent baby he held in 2287 is as lost to him as his wife and parents. He turns to the only other thing he’s held dear in his life, being a detective and upholding lawful justice. At this point the SS can betray the institute and side with the minutemen. The SS only turns on the brotherhood when they task him with the destruction of the railroad, believing death only a punishment for murder, not a means of risk management. After the campaign the SS will keep busy transforming settlements into law abiding outposts and prisons, whilst doing detective work on the side (which justifies the many side quests and Far Harbor DLC).

B.O.S ending: Reuniting with his long lost son quickly grows stale in the face of all the lies and deceit the Detective finds within the institute, much of which is apparently orchestrated by his own son. He turns to the only other thing he’s held dear in his life, being a detective and upholding lawful justice. At this point the SS can betray the institute and side with the B.O.S. The S.S only turns on the Railroad when he is ordered by his superiors, and his experience in the infantry kicks in, compelling him to complete orders without question. The SS later regrets this decision and is especially kind to synths in future, determined to amend this lapse in judgement. After the campaign the SS will keep busy transforming settlements into law abiding outposts and prisons, whilst doing detective work on the side (which justifies the many side quests and Far Harbor DLC).

Start/recommended end Special (including special magazine and bobble heads):
S3 P4 E5 C6 I7 A6 L2/ S4 P5(8) E5 C10 I9 A7 L4(6)
Core perks & justification:
- Armorer: You'll die in your coat without it
- Gunslinger: Your trusty 44 needs the power
- Commando: Your military experience gives you something to fall back on
- Locksmith/Hacker: A good detective is stopped in his tracks by locks
- Action boy: Simply allows you to use vats more often
- Lone Wanderer: Increases your carry weight, which will not be buffed by armor as the coat fills all body slots.
POST CAMPAIGN:
- Intimidation: You'll be able to talk down hostile humans, or rather attempt too, meaning you're doing all you can to act lawfully.
- Local Leader: Will make rebuilding settlements into prisons/outposts easier.

The rest are up to you although I recommend Rifleman, Gun nut, science, demo expert and medic. Some perks should be faction related ie. Sneak for Railroad, Nuclear physicist for B.O.S etc.
Equipment:
- Armored Faded Trench coat (p +2)
- Armored Battered Fedora (l +2)
- .44 pistol (preferably Kellogg's pistol)
- Spray and Pray (why I recommend demo expert)
Optionally:
- Armored Reginald suit (C +3)
- Armored Trilby hat (C +2)
- Black rimmed glasses (C +1)
Do you think this is a viable build/worth playing? I hope some of you decide to try this build and maybe adjust it to your own preference.

it's kind of saddening that content posts like this tend to get swept under the rug by error threads and flame wars. I mean I knew I wouldn't get a lot of feedback seeing as this is the steam forums but nothing? wasted effort, noted..

Well yes, there seems to be two kinds of posts. Those about content within the game, i.e this post, people asking about quests and companions and weapons. Then, there's the thousands of potato pc users asking why their game won't launch, and even worse the heated debate threads on controversial topics like whether the DLC is worth the season pass price.. I'd say the former gets swept aside by the latter quite a lot.
