Someone correct me if I'm wrong but -

AFAIK, they will not work if the cell that it's in isn't loaded.

It works for me , so yes
lPaladinl Jun 21, 2016 @ 4:20pm
No. If you leave the Map Cell (loaded area being processed by the game), all contraptions will cease to exist until you return within their loading boundries.

People in the official forum are saying that the stuff only works while they're in the settlement
lPaladinl Jun 21, 2016 @ 4:27pm
To test it, setup a hopper to pull from your workshop inventory, go to another settlement that has a supply line connection to where the hopper is, and dump in items.

It won't pull items from the inventory.

More inclined to believe this since they're physics objects, and simulating that would be a serious PITA -- it'd add a fair bit of load to simulate a couple of weeks' worth of physics on all objects in the settlement, never mind the interactions with normal resource gathering if you have a vacuum hopper drawing from the workshop.

I would not trust it to work even it the game tried, It can't even simulate a constant number of beds in a settlement all of the time.
Yhwach Jun 21, 2016 @ 4:45pm
No it won't, the way Bethesda works with Gamebryo and Creation Engine makes it so that exterior cells stop processing events and other things when you're far away from the landscape.

Oh man, how many times my settlements numbers are botched in FO4 after a longer save file.

Hell, in my current save, the game keeps trying to tell me that I have anywhere between 23-48 settlers in certain settlements, fluctuating all of the time until I actually visit the settlement it's self, when I have only 11 STATIC Charisma, and don't use any items that cause it to change.

Only if you promise it will not hurt ;)

Slow, sensual, and spiritual are the only things that will apply ;)

Yeah.. It can keep track of values, but can't process events, animations, etc. without you being within lod limits.

a conveyor from sanctuary to red rocket, then red rocket to corvega factory/highway took many spawned benches to keep the belt alive. otherwise the pathing would die but the animation of the moving belt would remain.

phase 2 - corvega highway to trinity river.

i havnt tested it with an object yet. im interested to see if it works tho. probably not.
im not building it for that purpose. lol.
(jungle safari track shoot. hunters travel in style). lol.
*calmex*
*psycho jet*

its gonna be fun testing things tho.

they dont even continue to work if you sleep in the settlement, they like stop what they are doing when you sleep or wait, so it seems you actually have to watch it do its thing.

Don't suppose anyone else here is familiar with Egosofts's X series?
Anyway, full physics simulation of contraptions whle out of cell is of course unlikely, but it is also probably unnecessary. You (the player) don't care about watching individual items roll down the comveyour belt whele you are halfway across the world map. You only care about the bottom line - how many units of product were produced and how m any units of supplies were consumed in the process When the player is out of cell, the contraption production / distribution process can be safely abstracted down to a simple logical pipeline model (certain items, like conveyor belt diverters and especially laser tripbeam sensors might take a little thought to deal with, but I can imagine ways it can be done). Furthermore, this model need not be run continuously - just update every few virtual hours, and of course whenever the player visits / approaches the settlement in question (in preperation for re-enabling full physics simulation).

The question is, has Bethesda actually done this (which is a classic example of something that would be difficult for modders to do well)?

EDIT: It looks like the answer is "no, they haven't" based on lpnlizard27's comment.
