Wicked logic: why cannot Deacon be romanced?! (An extremely long thread of a HeartBroken woman, spoilers all way through)
First things first, if you may ever wonder, Fallout 4 is my first action RPG ever. I played it quite well until now, discussing any difficulties with my boy friends, getting advices, watching letsplays, learning game stuff. I think I know how to move through, and I have played 200+ hrs for now finishing the main quest two times (just decided to make a better choice) and FH DLC one time.

The fact is: it's first time I meet a "companion gameplay" or whatever you call it. When you can use a hand of characters you find in game. So I played with Dogmeat for a long time when I started my first game (my SS is always Nora). Because I really love dogs(I have three at home :D). And I ignored all other companions, or just sent them to my place sometimes but nothing else. Nothing else until I met Nick Valentine. You may already guess what happened after. I fell in love at first sight. I used my dog to finish the main quest with Kellogg and then I sent my lil' boy to Sanctuary Hills and continued traveling with Nick enjoying every moment when I was surrounded by this man. I found out he can like, dislike and love n hate things, and the good was that I was lucky to impress him with my choices and terminal hacks. I asked my boyfriend what this all is about and he told me that most companions can be romanced in game when you impress them to maximum. I understood it my own way. I knew I cannot romance my Dog because, ...well, it's a dog after all, and it never reacts on any of my actions. But Nick was different. He had his word, his mind and his emotions. We had things like... talks, you know... I really meant it, I was waiting to max out our relationships. I was so upset when he disliked my agreement with the BOS and I tried to make other decisions he would like. He was the best companion I could wish to have through this game (partly because I have played The Talos Principle, IYKWIM).

When we finished Eddie Winter's case, I was crying irl, I'm not lying, I was so upset and broken... It's not "an old bot" who can't ask for "more that friendship", it's unlucky me who never deserved it.
I checked Fallout wikia, swiftly ran through the text and learned out I really couldn't do anything to make it up with Valentine, with Dogmeat, with Codsworth and a couple more 'nonames' I haven't yet met. I didn't actually make accent on any other NPCs because I didn't know all of them at that moment. I was actually in the very beginning of the game with very little side quests finished. I was really broken for the first time. I never expected this could happen. I didn't need anyone on my own but Nick who was, meanwhile, a very talented warrior with his 'nades and accurate shooting style.
So, I got a two days pause of depression and then continued playing. I remembered I can make it up with Cait because I saw that on Wycc220's letsplay so I went to Combat Zone, picked up Cait, and f***ed her, after that I took Piper, and then even Curie (for sure I had that night with Magnolia in Goodneighbor). All the damn sl**s of the Commonwealth. I had them all in my rage collection. I ended up being a lesbian romanced with girls only :D that's how I played it my first time. Keeping my heart open for one and only man. And then, on 18th May I just took back my lovely Valentine and traveled to FarHarbour to get some new emotions about the best detective of all the Commonwealth.

I decided to make it better way, make better decisions, find better armor, have a better ending Nick and me would enjoy and so on. I started a new game, I "maxed out" Valentine, I joined the RailRoad and started playing with Deacon this time. I knew I could romance with Paladin Danse (even though he was a synth) but I didn't have a chance to do it when I played my first game because too much rage was put out with my homosexual gaming :D So this time I declined Danse's invitation to the BOS and gave all my powers to the Railroad and our relationships with Deacon because he seemed cute. I really enjoyed his presence, the way he behaves and words he says. I was almost happy knowing I finally found a man, not a synth (or maybe a synth?;D), someone who is nice enough to be a good pair to my heroine. And I didn't suffer so much of friendship with Nick anymore. You know what happened in the end, don't you...
So I opened Wikia and I saw that there's a cross symbol in "Romance" column in "Deacon" line. You know, this just made me wonder. I can be lesbian(or gay if SS is Nate), I can sleep with a synth (Danse), I can romance with a Ghoul (Hancock) and I can make ex-ms.Nanny fall in love with me. But. I. Cannot. Be. With. A. Man. I. Could. Love. A real man. With heart and p*nis. Of my age. Dafak is goin' on in these games. I just dunno. It's just too much for me to understand. MacCready is a man with a son who lost his wife recently — and he can be my partner. Deacon doesn't have kids and his synthetic love died long ago but he cannot. Do all the best NPCs in this game tend to friendzone me???

I thought I found logic in Bethesda's character system after that distracting case with Nick. But no. I didn't. And it's the second time I bite my elbows and fall in despair. Why can't you make just... a single one good enough NPC my woman would love? *sigh*

You think you've got problems? I'm still pissed I can't romance robot Curie xD
It's a shame! I never wanted to romance him (I romanced Danse and MacCready <3) but I feel bad for all Deacon and Nick lovers. :steamsad:

Just a question: do you use mods? There is a mod on Nexus that allows you to romance Nick Valentine.

Wow. I share your sentiments. I just happened upon your post while looking up info on a disappearing Deacon after returning from the Vertibird. I considered most of the actions available to my female SS were pretty slim. While Piper, and the ghoul from the Slog have hit on me, but I haven't come across any possibility to romance initiated by my character. I first wondered if these female NPCs hit on whomever the SS was. Then I wondered if Nick and Deacon considered my SS to be male. I hadn't gotten that far with Palladin Danse, so I can't say with regard to him. I wondered if all the male companion characters were synths, too. Perhaps my character just isn't ready for romance!? lol...yeah, Deacon. And Nick. This ain't The Sims.

You're not entitled to someone else's affection, even in a game.

Get over yourself.

Considering what he's been through with his former lover, it's pretty understandable that he's not interested into having someone special anymore (or doesn't want to take the risk).
Yhwach Aug 13, 2018 @ 2:26pm
Because he's not interested?
He lost someone he loved in the past and never got over it, a synth would you believe it or not..and this long post is just kinda sad considering it's a game lol.

Get over yourself.

But the player is entitled to the affections of every female companion...

The funny thing is that the romance options are actually skewed in favour of male companions, with four male romance options compared to three female, increasing to five with the Nuka World DLC (where Porter Gage is added).

Though to be fair, all human female companions are romance options (Cait, synth Curie, Piper), while the male companions have Danse, Gage, Hancock (a ghoulified human), MacCready, and Preston, but not Deacon, Old Longfellow, Strong (a mutated human), or X6-88. So you do miss out on nearly half the human males, despite still having more male options in total.

Curie is a female too, unless of course you admit to having sexual desires towards a toaster.
Are we talking a two-slot or four-slot toaster?

Regarding original post, just wow.

I could see the romance getting to a certain point, but beyond that ... I would think certain *ahem* activities would chafe a bit. Plus she would get all clinical and logical about it afterwards.

"That seems to have hurt you a bit ... okay, perhaps a great deal. Shall I apply a salve and a bandage, or might it require surgical re-attachment?"
