but to keep in shape with this forum i have to add: play the game like it's meant to be played on PC... not with some console controller trash...
Just kidding. I have no experience with gamepads (besides my trusted G13). I'd like to help but i can't :(
Don't know if anything here worked for you, but just exiting DS4Windows made my controller for some reason screw up and not work right. I turned incredibly slow and the button configuration was all crazy, what made it work perfectly for me, was this:
1.) Exit Fallout 4 completely
2.) Run DS4Windows
3.) Hit the stop button in the bottom corner of the window, so that the controller details in the first tab of DS4Windows is gone. (it should say, "No controllers connected.")
4.) While keeping DS4Windows open, launch Fallout 4.
5.) Leave DS4Windows running while playing, you can minimize it but don't exit it out.
Not really sure why it works, but for me it did. Make sure that the launcher isn't open while you are opening DS4Windows. If it doesn't work try exiting DS4Windows completely as well as Fallout 4 first. The native support for dualshock 4 controllers in Fallout 4 works as far as I can tell, it's just DS4Windows that messes it up... Anyway, this is what worked for me. Hope it works for you!
TO FIX THE CONTROLS:
Once the controller itself is working, your controls may be pretty screwed up. If your start button is keybound to up on the D-pad, your square button rebound to X, then you'll have to do this:
1.) Quit Fallout 4, to the desktop.
2.) Restart the game with DS4Windows stopped.
2.5) Your control may be lit up at this point
3.) When it starts back up, your controls should all be routed to the right buttons, it should work like a charm. I test it by pressing the start button, making sure that it opens the menu, and using the touch pad to change into third person. If all other buttons work too, then you're golden.
Again, may or may not work. I have no clue what's up really with DS4Windows and Fallout 4 conflicting with each other like crazy, but this seems to work for me consistently.
I may need to try DS4 again, but it messed stuff up for me when I used it. Now what I've done to try and make my controller work for all games is to turn on Playstation 4 Controller Configuration in Steam settings. You have to enter big picture mode to access it. In big picture, you can tailor your button configurations for each game. It's not perfect as it did fix my other games that were messed up from it plugged in and no DS4; subsequently, it messed up Fallout 4. I still have tweaking to do.
Nonetheless, without using any mapping program or steam configurations and just plugging the PS4 controller in, Fallout 4 works. That much I'm certain.
Update: you can turn off steam controller configurations for any game. That way Fallout 4 works as do all my other games that would otherwise be messed up. In case you haven't figured it out a year later, I hope this helps
I use DS4 for Fallout 4 and my other games but until today this is the only problem I've experienced with the program.
I will try what T9X 69 said about turning off the DS4 program and see if it works. If by some miracle it does work I will update this comment so everyone will know it could be a possible fix.
Any solutions to the ps4 controller issues?
I like the playstation controllers a lot more, but I'll go with the simple plug & play option instead of having to troubleshoot and install jimmy rigging software that makes the game think it's an Xbox controller anyway...
Exactly what Microsoft wants. PS3 controllers actually work on PC. Microsoft has tried on and off to force gamers to get only XBox controllers, by blocking drivers installed by 3rd party products. PS3 controller for example installs drivers, back around Windows XP it worked just fine on PC. I don't remember which update, but eventually Windwos blocked the drivers for the dual anolog joysticks, so only the buttons worked on the controller. Pretty much breaking the PS3 controller on PC.
They then pushed game developers with For Windows Live to only support XBox 360 controllers. This was a serious problem for example when GTA IV came out, a lot of people didn't own XBox 360 controllers on PC.... but couldn't use their PC game pads for the game. Shady Shady behavior by Microsoft.
I say the headache is worth it, just so you can spit in Microsoft's face for getting around their attempts to monopolize gaming hardware on PC.
So I turned off all controller configuration support in big picture mode and guess what....it flipping works!!!!! Turning off every controller support worked flawlessly when I opened back up FO4
