Are Deathclaws really the apex predator in the lore?
loading screen seems to think the Deathclaws are the apex predator but lorewise are they truly the strongest predator out there? With other dangerous creatures like Mirelurk Queens, Gulpers, Fog Crawlers, Tunnelers, Radscorpions, and Behemoth. I don't know if Deathclaw are suppose to be consider the top predator anymore.

the original death claws were intelligent and you could talk to them. At least this was the case in Fallout 2. There are tougher enemies even in the vanilla game. I think the mirelurk queens are as bad, if not worse.

As the person above me said, Deathclaws are so dangerous because of their intelligence. Mirelurk queens, radscorpions, and behemoths are just mindless beasts. But a Deathclaw is a smart beast. And that makes it the most deadly one.

they aren't as smart in Bethesa fallout.

Ran around a corner in FH and stumbled across the very end of a fight between two chameleon deathclaws and a glowing fog crawler.

I don't think the deathclaws have much to worry about, except for humanoids carrying big guns.

i ran into a fight in vanilla game between a behemoth and three death claws, two of them legendary. The behemoth beat all three of them. But behemoths are much easier to kill than death claws. So i don't get this.

Tunnelers are the superior apex ppredator in numbers

I think the behemoth gets an advantage in reach, since they're usually carrying fire hydrant standards from the cap all the way down to the main valve.... ~6-8 feet of cast iron hurt.

Behemoths hit alot harder than deathclaws in my experience...

What the guys said above. Lore wise - as far as we all know -. There could be exceptions, such as the artifact of the Cabot Family. It has a high level of sentience and intelligence, but we can't consider it a "bestial" creature (yet).

Deathclaws would lose to some of the known creatures if you'd put them in say, a pit for a 1v1 battle to the death. In nature, they'd avoid fights they cannot win or team up together in packs to take down a larger target.

I think the best thing we can make an example with would be that a "behemoth/mirelurk queen" is a "TRex with a lower IQ" and a Deathclaw a Raptor (Which were already (supposedly!) extremely smart) at an even higher level such as it's capable of learning other languages.

And with that example you'd see that roaming trexes would pose little to no threat to packs of raptors.

Deathclaws in FO2 were not only intelligent, they speak English. ENGLISH. This why despite the hordes of protestors, I just cannot consider FO2 to be canon. It's too silly to be canon.

I'm a little surprised that I haven't seen any mods which give chameleon deathclaws the Stealth Boy effect.

Nocturnal-only stealthed Chameleon Feral Ghouls might be interesting, heh.

Why is speaking english so weird, the Deathclaws in 2 are much smater than the average deathclaw the setting is in America and they where experimented on by the enclave, remmnets of the US military.

Then there is those Sentry bots can go toe to toe with a deathclaw.

CHAMELEON AUTOMATRONS. they can cloak their deathclaw counterpart only changes color which is awesome by the way.

Come around a corner with a SUPERMUTANT and a laser gatling then just be happy jetpacks are now attached to powerarmor.

All of those don't count as they're not beasts. If you feel they SHOULD count then I'd add a final one to the list:

The Courser.

And Coursers only get better versions rather quickly (Compared to normal evolutions of creatures)

according to the law, deathclaw is an intelligent species with monarch kind of society, just like mirelurk queen, there is alpha deathclaw and ancient deathclaw, frankly speaking, they can add everything to the lore and make it stronger than the deathclaw, but none of the above mention monsters are as popular as deathclaw in fallout universe, there are just some of them like Mirelurk Queens and Behemoth or inhabit a special habitat like Gulpers, Fog Crawlers, Tunnelers. Radscorpion is no way stronger than a normal deathclaw in the lore

wasn´t it so that only the deathclaw broodmother could talk?
and if i remember correctly deathclawas were an fev experiment,
so maybe they got dumber every generation.
not canonical would be the bos deathclaws, they even had fur, strange reptiles:alienlogo:
