Can't call vertibird, can't get new signal grenades (SPOILERS EVERYTHING!!)
I finished the game the minuteman way, so I did that thing that I'm trying not to spoil. I don't remember if Preston gave me signal grenades or not, then survival mode came out, and now I want to fly vertibirds cause I can't fast travel. I see that both the minutemen and and the railroad offer vertibird rides after completing the whole story line, but I can't get either of tinker tom or preston to give me signals. which will ruin this whole playthrough, because walking around a completely 100% discovered map is just terrible.

Any one know how to prompt either faction to offer vertibird rides (all main quests are completed)? I can mod to use console if necessary.

I guess that it is only avaible through console commands

There is some flares in the armoury of the Castle. They spawn there after the Brotherhood... exits.

This, and some merchants sell them, including whatsername that lives at the Castle when you first take it over and hangs around the armory, I think.
Do the flares work for vertibird travel? I thought they were just to call nearby minutemen to your aid. I'll try when I get off work and report if that worked. Thanks for the responses so far.

No, the flare gun (which uses flares as amunition) and the vertibird signal grenade are different things. I guess lei07 got confused.
Both should be inside the castles armory alongside the artillery signal grenade.

crap. No grenades there...

My concern is that I somehow screwed up the ending (I thought i was pro-railroad and pro-minuteman) so that neither give me any signal flares... I might have to grab an old backed up save and do the whole end game all over.

I got a mod to enter the console in survival mode, but other than using COC to fast travel, I could not resolve the lack of vertibird grenades (and I did player.additem vertibird signals, but those do not call any vertibirds. they just make a sad little orange plum of smoke, leaving me destined to schlep all over creation). I would like to play unmodded vanilla survival mode... but not without some ability to travel.
