You don't trust me? It's happened, at first you can save thousands of ammo, "later you and your companion wasted more ammo that the enemy drop".
I still have money, but to think that I can exhausted all my ammo found in the open and I'm a very effective treasure hunter too.
I never buy ammo before, I think I'm gonna start doing it now, I never sell junks in this new survival, just caps that I found so far since beginning and I only accumulate about 3500 caps now minus 3 antibiotics I bought.
An assault rifle can be found not far inside of the national guard building.
Your really going to want Scrounger though.
I sneak where possible, but automatic build not the best sneaker there. Must be closer and only opening bullet counts as sneak attack.
Every hit with vats take 3 ammo each and usually lv 20 enemy take about 4-5 VATS (12-15 bullets) aside bulkier one, and there is a lot of lv 20+ enemies add that those Automatron DLC enemies which much bulkier.
I guess scrounger is needed now? at first I worry about ammo weight.
They chew through ammo and are inferior in almost every way
Yeah but it's fun, and it's better with legendary weapons that add fixed damage like Freezing, Energy, Explosion, Wound. Later you either specialized in Automatic+Explosion : Explosion, Automatic+Rifle/Automatic+Pistol : Freezing and Energy.
For high damage weapon I only have two shoot as legendary effect choice (the second bullet damage from two shoot is only as high as base damage)
And for my example automatic weapons got to use all the ammo we find, it is more taxing in survival, either that become more fun or not depends on player views.
My build is only 3 int though so I dispose every energy weapons I found. I planned since the beginning I don't use energy weapons this playthrough.
But it is certainly the first time I have ammo problem in Fallout 4.
I'm using Flamer, there is a lot of Flamer in saugus firework, I don't have any specialization in heavies though.
Even Spray and Pray sucks.
Just take a look at weapons in Fallout New Vegas. An early starting 10mm pistol does 22 damage, and a 10mm SMG does 19 damage, with 3 times the firing rate! This is perfect. It lets you pull out the SMG when you need to lay down more damage in a shorter amount of time, at the cost of bullets. I did this all the time, and don't recall ever having issues with the ammo (except at the very start of the game).
A quick search on Nexus finds a mod that somewhat improves auto damage, by adding more mods for each gun:

Might be worth a shot. No pun intended. :P
Automatic damage is more than half from non automatic one (you need to upgrade both automatic and non automatic to a fair comparison).

Problem with automatic build is shorter range and keeping up with recoil.
Two-shot AR with the best auto receiver: firerate 133, damage 154 (commando 5, no bloody mess, no adrenaline)
Two-shot AR with the best semi-auto (named advanced) receiver: firerate 59, damage 198 (rifleman 5, no bloody mess, no adrenaline)
As you see the firerate is 125% higher, the accuracy stays the same if you aim down sight, only hipfire acc decreases from semi-auto to auto.
The rifleman 30% armor ignore is not even there to compensate the loss of dps, but it's definitely good vs certain enemies, heck it can even beat the autos if you fight fog crawlers all day, but you don't.
Sorry but you need to aim if you want to use automatic weapons, I have about 7000 5.56 rounds in my stash and only recently I've started using the AR. But that might be scrounger which even rank 1 makes you drown in ammo.
Well not sure about later, but right now I even take alternative weapons, all my ammo exhausted.
For example it can take 30+ shots 10mm/ .45 ammo to take 1 lv 20-35 Automatron robots, which usually come in group, they are everywhere, and love to eat my ammos.
It takes about 30-40 shots to down a Behemoth with Automatic Combat Shotgun (which at my level it's damage is 119) but Behemoth is very rare.
From the beginning I only be able to collect and save 1000+ combined ammos. I'm lv 21 now.
Without scrounger perk and without buying any.
Are you survival? how do your fare in the beginning?
