they are numbers in a file, just the whole file is encrypted by twofish/aes or similar algo. so the numbers/values you see on a pc without decryption are junk.
That's the thing, you can't make it work because it would never work, at all.
Even if we had a way to completely deconstruct/reconstruct Bethesda's file format which we don't, you would then need to be able to decompile a valid PS4 save file and that ability is kept well under wraps for consoles because it often leads to them being hacked.
Thats about right. In theroy if we could read the PS4 save format, you could transfer that to the PC format. But the fact of the matter is that even if you could read it, if the save is anything more advanced then a set of flags, inventory list, stats, and a cell position (i.e. a serialized state), the chances of being able to convert that is slim. This is because there are too many factors and edge cases to consider.
Well people managed to do it for previous bethesda games.
It's fairly simple for Xbox/X360 I think. Probably X1 too, but never seen proof.
But Xbox, Xbox360 and Xbox1 all use DirectX and windows software. PS4 and PS3 use proprietary OS and API's. From what I know, the OS is based off Linux.
It can't be on Xbox One because Xbox One saves are 100% encrypted.
It could possibly happen on a JTAG 360 but it would be a lot of work and I doubt that many people would bother even if it was possible.
You don't need a JTAG, you just need a USB stick formated to your 360, and Modio or Horizon on your PC. Just move the files to your PC, extract the ".dat" save file from it, then rename the file extention to ".ess" I moved my Oblivion file to PC that had over 300 hours on it. It works the same for Skyrim and Fallout 3/ New Vegas.
Hang on, so let me get this straight. You played 300 hours on the 360 version of Oblivion and then opened that same save file on the PC version just by changing the file extension?
Those tools that you mentioned just provide a way to view the Xbox file system on Windows but the method that you have described there sounds a little too easy tbh.
The UESP has a whole page on how to do it in the way I described.

That's really interesting, I never would have thought that would be possible. Thanks.
