Which Companion?
I am going for a sneaky/sniper type build. I was just wondering if there are any suggestions for companions that would go well with this or even if it would be better to have no companion at all and get the solo perk. Any advice would be much appreciated.

When I play as a sniper I find having a companion with is just trouble, so if I was you when sniping leave the companion behind and make use of that lone wander perk.

Yes, companions are frustrating for a Sneaky/Sniper build. Deacon has the best perks for a Sneaky/Sniper build as he provide the Cloak and Dagger perk. This gives +40% duration for Stealth Boys and +20% damage from sneak attacks.

But Deacon is the worst companion for a Sneak/Sniper when it comes to his AI. He is constantly getting in the way or blowing your cover.

Dogmeat's AI is probably the best for a sniper build. While crouching he will tend to stay behind you and not rush in and blow your cover.

without mods? Cait has a special settings that makes her not influence stealth, last I checked.

In terms of pure stats, just take lone wanderer for the damage bonus. But I find going alone is less fun than playing with a companion that makes comments.

Companions really irritate me too, even dog meat and his whinning slober.

To each their own but I play as half sniper/have non vats rifles, shotty, minigun etc. WITH the solo perk. Only way to go IMHO.

Just depends if you like the company, or if when sniping for example, dog meat runs off to find a bone. I wouldn't risk bringing any with me. Probably I'd end up blasting them with with a 10mm to the head. Solo with Solo perk suits me great!

No companion. Get the solo-perk. Companion A.I. and path finding is just crap.

Every companion is mechanically the same thing. They just look and sound different.

Not totally right, all have 4 ranks in stealth but Dogmeat and Strong. Dogmeat has a unique rank 5 in stealth and Strong doesn't do stealth at all.

I don't doubt it. But still companions suck. Solo Perk - one of the first I got.

Nick always hangs back. He catches up but still remains in the background or at least not in my way. vanilla.

Dogmeat is the best companion. He gets his own perk set. And is effected by the general Companion perks, AND you still get the Lone Wanderer perks. His ability to incapacitate is priceless when you send him in to attack a target manually.

Either order them to stay back or don't use them at all.

This is particularly true when entering a building. They get stuck in doorways at the worst time, blow your stealth and just basically make a nuience of themselves.
