Choosing faction (possible spoilers)
Hi! I'm struggling a bit with not excluding any factions. This is where I am at so far:

*Just completed the Freedom Trail quest, so I have met with the Railroad, but haven't done any quests for them yet. In the main quest, I now have to return to Virgil.
*I have done several quests for the Minutemen, with Old Guns (the one after Taking independence) being the latest one.
*I have done Call to arms for the Brotherhood of Steel, but not joined them yet.
*Not yet met the Institute

I am a bit afraid of doing any mistakes, by doing quests for factions that exclude my involvement with the other factions. Can I for instance do quests for the Railroad now without excluding quests for other factions, or join the Brotherhood of Steel?

Until a certain point in the story, you can keep being best buds with all the factions. There is a part where you more or less chose the minutemen or the institute, another where you chose between the BoS and institute and finally one where you chose between the railroad and the institute. It becomes very clear and obvious when you make these choises.

Though Deacon and Preston lose affinity if they see you helping out the BoS and Danse dislikes if he sees you helping the railroad.

no you should be able to carry all but their final quests to finsh the main quests. (CAREFUL OF QUESTS THAT MAKE FACTIONS HATE YOU). how ever there is some overlap,at some points where tyou hand in a quest, instead they may give a quest to destroy the leaders of another faction.

which is kind of neat because you can either save 3 factions from dying or you can kill 3 factions. there is a guide online if you wish to see how thats done

So when I have to choose one faction to help me get inside the Institute, it doesn't matter which one I choose? And if I join the BoS, it doesn't necessarily exclude the other factions?

Correct, up until a certain point in the game (which you are a bit away from) you can side with all factions. If you don't mind hearing some spoilers I'm sure some people would be willing to tell you the quests that'll change your standing with certain factions

This is correct. Without spoiling your experience let me give you some clues. I'm only going to tell you names of quests so you can keep an eye out for them. What this does is permit you to get to the point where you can chose which faction to finish the game with. Most people backup this save so they can play out all three Main Quest endings before continuing on with post-MQ game.

1) Tactical Thinking (BoS Quest)
2) Underground Undercover (RR Quest)
3) Mass Fusion (Institute)

Which ever of these three quests you choose to COMPLETE will fail the others and you will have chosen that factions ending. You may do as many quests for each faction up until this point without risk of alienating any of them.

If you wish to do the Miniuteman ending you must finish The Nuclear Option WITH the Minuteman. This quest has options as to who you choose to work with BUT only working with the Minuteman will unlock their ending.

There also a way to do the MM ending while keeping both BoS and RR friendly and giving you quests.

This envolves Issuing the Evac order (look for it it is an option during The Nuclear Option).
Finally do not complete Danse's fate mission. It should get obvious when you get it. Just don't do it before the ending of the Main Quest. Otherwise the main BoS questgiver will not talk to you after completing the Main Quest line.

Here is a detailed video with some spoilers you can look at when you get to the appropriate point and still have questions.

Thanks for the good explanation!
I'm not entirely sure I got the part about MM. Does this mean that even if I choose one of the three quests above, I can still do the MM ending? I'm not sure how far into the game Nuclear Option is compared to the other 3 quests you mentioned.

You can go pretty far along all three factions storylines before you have to worry about anything. When you're ready to complete the story by siding against the Institute, make sure you get banished from the Institute and then use the Minutemen to take them down. So long as you don't do quests for any group that involve destroying another of the three groups, they will all stay friendly. I had to avoid talking to Kells on the Prydwen for a while as talking to him would have triggered the quest to destroy the Railroad, but once I finished Nuclear Option that quest ended/failed, and I didn't have to avoid Kells any longer.

You will restart the game and choose a differant path next time, you dont need to do everything. Just have fun man. You have some great advice, just play your chartactor how you think you should.

I don't want to spoil the game for you but if you side against the Institute then you will need to elist one of the three factions to assist you. This happens during the Nuclear Option. This is prior to those three mission. The choices you make during The Nuclear Option will determine which of those three quests you get. It is possible to have more then one of those quests active but you can only finish one of them. This happens if you basically are leading them all on until your final decision.

To side against the Institue AND have both the BoS and RR friendly AND available to give you quests you must elist the MM's aid during The Nuclear Option. When you get the quest it will make more sense as there will be multiple optional tasks to elist the various factions assistance.

I don't want to say anymore to avoid spoilers. But to answer your original question, up and until The Nuclear Option you may take as many quests from all 4 factions as you like. And I'd recommend that you do since it will give you a sense as to their motives.

Regardless of the choices you make: Backup your save when you get The Nuclear Option. Then backup the save following your completion of the Main Quest line (for each faction.)

This way you can restore your Nuclear Option backup and play out the other endings. Then just choose which post ending save to begin from as you continue your post Main Quest game.
