Fallout 4
Settlement Size Limit: How is it this small?!
Recently started the max limit challange [Get max settlers, settlements, ect.], and....Holy crap the Settlement build limits are so flipping small! I just hit the max build limit in Starlight Drive-in after building a prefab two story and a 'large' two story, with nothing but beds, some crops, the 6 stores and some turrets. Hooooooooow?........We have a whole field to build on, and using a 5th of it hits the build limit? And what bugs me is I took the time to actually remove EVERYTHING I could [on a seperate save], and I still have half the bar filled....Excuse me, what? Is the *ground* counting towards the build limit?

Am I the only one that thinks this is nuts?

I am wondering how much all these power armors i just leave all over my settlements tank the performance.
PC settlement cap is the same as the consoles. Even the PS4 could safely over-build the limit in some places by double, but these limits are in place because Fallout 4 is a COMMERCIAL PRODUCT which means it has to work at a certain standard. With no limit, people with lesser PCs or Console can permanently break their save by over-building beyond the memory limit.

With the "Build LImit Bar" no matter how easy it is to circumvent, Bethesda effectively absolves itself of any responsibility. This is why there is a disclaim with Bethesda.net Mods. "We are not responsible if you brick your hardware."

which is why I mentioned that spring cleaning mod is the best option to remove as many objects as possible, You are still at the vanilla build size that way, but more room to expand

Yes the assets that can't be removed count towards the limit. Houses for example, it's stupid.

I think most people just use the weapons / workshop glitch to expand the build limit.

Any method used to increase that limit will have side effects. The worst would be file corruption. At best the AI will slowly become more retarded the more you add. I've seen some mega builds where turrets don't target enemies, settlers just stand in one spot, raids attack and only 1/3rd of them can fight.

Anyone doing this should do it sparingly.

I can confirm that it can cause glitches
i had missing workshop categories because i increased the settlement limit too much

but if you do it within reason
its safe

can't say for sure about file corruption because for obvious reasons i didnt went OTT with the settlement limit glitch
I've overbuilt the hell out of some of my settlements, and the only one that I was really seeing issues with was in Sanctuary. I got rid of some turrets, a couple dozen suits of Power Armor, and decorations like the disco ball and it improved, but I should probably get around to rebuilding the whole place. It does seem like Far Harbor and Vault 88 are a little more forgiving in terms of the build size, and so far Nuka World does, too. I've got a giant damn vault built in Nuka World and it has been doing okay.
To boost the max limit without mods all you have to do is drop any item that can be scrapped onto the ground and scrap it, the game thinks that you have scrapped some structure. guns and armor works best
4 ways to increase the limit:

- open console -> click on the workbench -> setav 34B <value> (20000 or more. Best way)
- download a mod from Nexus. All hail Nexus
- Do the weapon workbench glitch. Its the worst way to increase your settlement limit and it takes hours. Its only helpful for the console version. Go for youtube
- Download the Fallout 4 script Extender. It takes skill and time to learn how it works. But you can create on a easy way mods for your settlement. Like remove items, more landscapes for your settlements or place special items and more.

Doesn't take hours, it takes as long as it takes for you to select and hit R-Enter on 30 dropped weapons, in build mode. That usually frees up enough limit to build until I'm tired of building.

No weapons? Player.placeatme 24f55 30 (while *outside*).

@ Mr. i know it better

it takes hours for the xbox/PS4 version and for creative people like me.

I dropped but I didn't scrap. I stored the weapons back in the workbench so I could drop and store them over and over. I had over 100 short combat rifles, over 100 short assault rifles, etc. When I dropped them on the ground, there were only 5 or 6 rifles there but they represented several hundred. Dropping and storing them just a few times caused the build meter to drop quickly.

I went to Spectacle Island to build the biggest building I could and stuff it with all the things I could just to see how far I could push it. I made the video below when it started to chug. I included a frame rate counter to illustrate the problem.

I'm using only two mods: Spring Cleaning and Settlement Management Software.

Thats not a good way to do it, if ya do too much drop and scrap it can become unstable if build limit gets too high
The mod 'Dont Call Me Settler' has an undocumented console command 'set iSRCBudget to 1' then open the build menu, it will double the budget. I always turn it back off after using it.

It can be activated by the in-game mod menu on xbox.

That is true but irrespective of how he boosts the limit, it'll make the game unstable. Using console commands, scrapping items or even mods all do the exact same thing with stability.
I really have to ask. What did you build exactly? Is there a screenshot for this?
