Is dogmeat descendant of the dog that ran away?
Is dogmeat descendant of the dog that main character mentions running away when you examine the dog bowl during prewar?

Dogmeat had a ton of puppies according to the ending of Fallout 3, there's even a perk that makes a joke out of it.
Except it's a different breed, so they probably just named him that for nostalgia purposes, personally I renamed the dog to River.

I find it kind of hard to beleive that dogmeat from Fo3 was an ancestor of dogmeat in Fo4.

Fo3 occured in Washington D.C. (iirc) and Fo4 takes place in massachusetts. That would be a long journey.

As to the original question, probably. I've never heard anything to state one way or the other, but I like to think so.

I always figured he was owned by someone the roving dog seller sold him to, then that person died.

Dog meat is the imortal spirit of the wastland he omly apears in times of need to aid true heros

Which is why he chose to aid the vault dweller, the chosen one, the lone wanderer and the sole survivor but not the mailman for the mailmans delivery of death to the divide was too breat a sin for the great imortal dog spirt to forgive. For he was born from the destruction of the old world and does not wish to see the new one fall.

What if he is the spotter for the mysterious stranger (dogmeat's owner). He saw how much dogmeat liked the SS and decided to help when the SS was in danger (to protect his dogs feelings from getting hurt).

Seems like people are missing the point of the OP. The question asked was not if Dog is a descendant of Dogmeat from previous Fallout games. The question was asking if Dog is a descendant of the Dog that the Player's Character owned before the bombs fell. When you inspect the Dog Bowl in your house during the intro, your character will make a remark about your once owned Dog running away and not being able to find them.

There's no definite answer given as to Dog's origins. All we know is that Mama Murphy knew he'd be around to guide the player.

he was added just cause its part of the lore I guess, he was found at a junk yard in Fallout 3, and now just appears at Red Rocket because of it

I thought of something Drastically different when you said "SS". That SS never had an immortal dog and never should have, just like everyone else in the world.

There was only like 10 years between fo3 and 4. And we don't know where the SS from fo3 wandered off to. Could be one of the fo3 puppies. Highly unlikely it's the descendant of the pre-war dog though. Maybe through 2000x dilution maybe.

I too wondered if the dog was a far descendant of the one that bolted at the beginning. Wonder if it was also going out to help people in need... or find some place to hide from the bomb so it's future pups didn't end up mutated.

"Dogmeat" is directly named after the actual faithful companion dog in the movie, "A Boy and his Dog." In fact you can watch that movie on Youtube for free.

Basically it was a movie reference in the original game by Interplay.
