Is manufacturing items and efficient way to earn caps?
In the contraptions dlc, is it worth it to mass produce items with the intent to sell them for caps? If so, then which item or type of items would be the most efficient to do this with?

If this turns out to not be a very productive idea, should I stick to producing things like fresh water or jet instead?

i have not done the contraption stuff, but have heard from others on this forum that the manufacturing idea doesn't work very well. Unless it is something you look forward to doing, i would skip the contraption stuff and continue to farm water and jet. Robot repair kit gives a good payoff, as does poison caltrops. Robot repair also gives pretty decent xp (14 per). Maybe add this to your cash flow plan?

i checked the machinery for producing materials and products...It's not worth it. like really no. Don't do it. You have to spend more resources to gain objects that woudn't give a lot to sell to merchants or what else. Suggest doing other ways instead of doing the manfactuaring.

for me, this just breaks immersion. I know it is just a game, but having caps explode out of creatures seems so unreal.

we all have our personal preferences on what is or is not immersion breaking. For me, the cap thing just is too over the top and goofy. And i don't want it to be too easy to get caps. I am not swimming in caps like some of the other players on the forum, but i haven't dropped below 4000 for over 100 hours. And this is with buying tons of stuff for my settlements.

I think lunch boxes are the only thing you should make in any volume.

What do you even spend caps on? I have not noticed a need yet. Or is it because I'm just playing hard, and not survival?

manufactering is slow
you have to stay with the machines all the time or the
machines wont produce anything
put some water purifiers, they work day and night

+1

I have like 1100 water production in sanctuary, and with maxed out charisma, its enough to buy out almost everything from a single trader
