What difficulty are you playing at? If you're on Survival the full-auto weapon might not be a great idea because automatic = more ammo to carry and ammo takes weight in Survival. Also, it's difficult to hunt with an automatic since game can get skittish when you get close. A rifle is better for this...one shot = dinner.
I agree with your next part. I would rather have a weapon that ALWAYS gave me 'Plus something' than one that had a chance at 'plus something' any day. In the Wasteland you NEED stuff you can rely on. Armor is like this too. All of those '15% damage reduction versus Mirelurks' stuff? Nah...sell it. Unless you can find enough pieces that have that (in which case you have -75% damage!) versus something you fight alot like Humans, Supermutants etc then one piece isn't really worth it unless there's nothing better around at that time.
Never spend money on something you can craft yourself. Crafting it means that you have a supply of it AND you can sell the extras to buy things you can't make yourself. In Survival mode I ALWAYS take Chemist so I can make Antibiotics straight away. I also wind up take Chem Resistance early on to avoid addiction even though I can likely cook up something to cure addictions if I need it. I play on PC and my 4-6 inventory slots are all meds for combat. Big fight? 4...5...6 in rapid succession and now I take less damage, deal more damage and the world is slowed for a long time.
My son once noted that chain armor (we were at a Renaissance fair) wouldn't keep you from getting hurt. I said 'it might not but it will keep you from DYING which is more important.' Yes, at level 50 you'll die in half a dozen shots or less. However, without armor that would likely be 1-2 shots. The difference is your ability to take cover, shoot back and take a Stim Pack. I NEVER use Perks for something that I can get another way. Use them for things you can't get anywhere else like additional carry weight, better lockpicking and Gun Nut. The 5 points you spent on Toughness, I spent on Rifleman so my guns do double damage.
As with all things, take everything with a greain of salt. Play YOUR game the way YOU want to play it. If you do something you think is fun and works for you, who CARES what others think?
Rhoedd, your play style is my play style. i have 600 hours of game play, and have done the main quest once. I wanted to see what it had to offer. My latest character has 220 hours, and i have yet to free Nick, a very necessary part of the main quest. I explore, build, kill, loot, and then i start the cycle all over again. For me, it is the most fun i have had in a game since the original fallout 3.
I hate auto weapons most of the time. The good ones weigh a ton. The ones i am taking off kills weigh 20 lbs. Or more. They have good kill numbers, but i can't afford the weight limit. And my character was built as a sniper-sneak. So i carry a sniper rifle with a good scope for distance kills, a 10 mm for up close, and a plasma pistol for harder kills.
Combat style will determine perks. Sneak-sniper is easiest for survival noobs. Any noob, for that matter. I almost always play this style. Perks can make a big difference. For a sneak build, agility and its perks sneak, ninja, and sandman are a must. The sneak bonuses can make even legendary mirelurk queens and death claws one or two shot kills.
Armor: i would combine it with tough perk, lifegiver perk. Lifegiver has the great regeneration 3rd rank that is much cheaper than the Sun one at 10 stat. i would also pick up aquamarine, since there is a lot of water. Swimming gets you to a lot of places quicker and safer than going across the land. And enemies will not follow you into the water.
