If you like backpacks that much, Day Z has a great backpack system, where every single piece of clothing adds inventory space to store stuff -- but that's really incompatible with Fallout's current inventory system.
The perks strong back, lone wanderer , placing points into STR, and pocketed gear are the ways to bring up your carry weight.

I just think a backpack would be in the top 10 list for any post apocalyptic wastelander IRL.
How do I explain it? I would say there is no invisible backpack. More like an invisible medium sized submersible hovercraft lorry silently following you around. :-P
