Modding this game is impossible
First mod I want to try: dependent on Script Extender
Try to get Script Extender to install: doesn't even open.
And yet modding this game is a massive thing... I don't get it...

Silverlock's instructions are very, very easy to follow. If you can't figure them out, maybe be specific about what you're having trouble doing.

Don't download mods until you have it installed.

Don't bother with paying for a nexus thing and jesus christ never ever ever download collections that way if you don't know what they do.

Always read every single mod's forum or bug reports. There may be red flags for them - modder not responsive, not updated in years, lots of new and unresolved bugs, lots of conflicts with other mods.

But basically it's a follow the dots installation. If you're running an OS that isn't suitable - mac, linux, or windows 11 for current instances - maybe don't try modding until you're running a stable w10/7 install.

then don't download mods that require script extender, they break anytime the game is updated anyway, there is lots of other mods available that don't need script extender

you have to follow the instructions to properly install script extender.

https://f4se.silverlock.org/

then use the f4se launcher game must have been run at least once without it to create the ini files first.

you could do what i did, pay 5 pounds for a months membership of nexus mods. Then you can download an entire collection of 419 mods with one click and it does it all for you. Game 32gb, mods 72gb - equal fun. Honestly for a fiver it does it all, goes to the site where you download the script extender, and with one click on it, your done. So stop moaning, get your wallet out or learn to do it yourself, its not hard.

you do not have to pay to install a collection you just have to manually click the popup for each mod and select slow download then wait for it to finish its download and pop up the next one to click when not being a paid customer.

Maybe you shouldn't mod the game yet. If you aren't able to deal with baby first steps, you can seriously break your game next.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Not the biggest fan of F4SE either. Thankfully, there are plenty of mods that are essentially plug and play. You just unzip the files, drop them in your data folder, and then enable them in bethesda's built in mod manager. You can even find a bunch of mods through the built in mod manager itself. I'd personally recommend Whispering Hills and Bullpup Bozar.

I have absolutely no idea why people have issues with F4SE.
You extract 3 files from the archive to your game installation folder, then run the f4se_loader.exe instead of fallout4.exe.
Just create a desktop shortcut pointing to the new executable.

I would recommend watching YouTube tutorials I’ll go ahead and link this dude video as he shows you how to setup skse and how to setup vortex mod manager if you are able to follow along with what he does you should be able to successfully install everything you want.

Please note you need to create a nexus mods account in order to install mods without it things won’t work. Pro tip if you are installing mods and you see vortex say a mod conflict has appeared go ahead and click on use suggested actions button allow vortex to sort the conflict out if it can’t I would recommend to avoid using that mod unless the modder himself says somewhere this mod needs to load before or after etc then go ahead and set that manually but for the most part avoid trying to set the before or after stuff manually as it can cause issues. Vortex mod manager will hold your hand through the whole process so it’s pretty hard to mess up when modding.

y'know, for bethesda games at least, you usually just drag and drop the files in the correct places. of course that could just be me being used to modding bethesda games.

at OP: you'll get it buddy, just takes some patience and a willingness to read all the initial stuff.

Get Mod Organizer 2 for a none-destructive way of modding your game. Also supports Fallout 4 Nexus, so you can very easily download and install mods through Mod Organizer 2 with a single click from the nexus.
it's a must-have for me because it's very easy to setup and manager your mods.
Plus it doesn't actually put any files in your fallout 4 folder.

This. It's pretty trivial.

Why not windows 11?
I play it in 4K with more than 20 mods, F4SE and reshader. I use Vortex.
You have to prepare some things, but it runs absolutely stable for me.

yeah i know, but for a fiver i dont have to sit there and watch 72gb download one mod at a time. But yes its possible to do free. I usually do it one by one for skyrim, but for fallout i just went for a total collection, its called storywealth and its pretty good.

Modding this game is not that complicated. For the most part it's just drag and drop in the data folder. The ingame mod menu is just fine as well
